Shaw barrels?

So tell me how they get away saying they are match barrels? You run that Tube stuff through it and it smoothed it up, from the rounding of the lands it will be a good hunting gun not a match barrel.... jim

You say a lot of things about a lot of things... that just leave me shaking my head.

I was talking about the Shaw.

If you are talking about my barrel? That particular barrels shoots as well as any of my machine cut barrels, and I have a few. Tubb break in bullets work in all barrels.

That's easy, there is no universally accepted definition or criteria for a "match" barrel so it's up to each individual maker to create a standard if they want one. I betcha a Shaw barrel that didn't make "match" snuff would probably shoot about as well as one that does make their criteria for a "match" barrel.

I'm considering bailing on this 260 deal. This rifle had two factory barrels plus this Shaw and it hasn't consistently shot well with any loads I've tried. If I can find a LH 700 short action or maybe a Savage I may try some of the 6.5CM kool aid.

I sold a LH. Savage that shot in .4 range or less after it had the muzzle cut back a little and crowned. It only made copper for a little then it quit and the only thing I used was patches and a brush to clean it....... jim

Bench guys know that some barrels shoot different clean vs fouled, they only are going to clean when needed. If you completely clean the barrel you will have to determine how many foulers will be needed, be fore hunting so your zero setting returns. You said it is a deer rifle, under 2 moa is ok. A reliable zero, very important.

Btw I never used the word match to describe my barrels, as far as I know. You certainly could shoot a match with one, and I have customers who are. In fact, Compass Lake and White Oak have made more Wilson blanked match barrels than all the others combined.

Tubb uses his break in bullets in every barrel he uses. He has won a few matches.

I call them the BBVV barrel (budget benchrest/varmint vaporizer)

I had a Winchester that I could only get 10 accurate shots from. Cleaned the barrel spotless then used Tubbs Final Finish on it. It shot much better afterward. That was many years ago so I forget the details of how many accurate shots I got after the process. But I know I kept the gun ten more years. So it had to have been decent. Say under 3/4 MOA.

It really does bother me that Tubb abrasive bullets are not universally embraced. They really do work. The entire concept that they ruin barrels is absurd.

TMS bullets are the #1 abrasive from the break in kit. I just use those, you get like 30 in a $25 kit. And I shoot very reduced charges with the TMS bullets, like 6 grains under typical. They are leaving the barrel at like 2000 FPS.

I use 5-8 for break in, and shoot two TMS bullets every 200 rounds. My barrels are not fouling badly even at varmint velocities.

I would take that Shaw and shoot 10 TMS bullets through it a reduced charge and scope it again. If it is a hunting rifle I bet you will be more than satisfied. Although, I am speculating.

The Tubb Final Finish kit worked well for me on my RPR factory .308 barrel. I was getting .5 MOA performance and wanted to see if these bullets of Tubb's, might help improve that performance and if they ruined the barrel, I had plans on replacing it some time anyway. I didn't use the two most abrasive rounds in the kit and after using the others as directed, I found my barrel was much smoother to clean, looked smoother through the bore scope and it did help improve performance. The only negative thing was that I measured the freebore before and after using the bullets and found the throat had eroded by ~ .011. All in all, I was pleased with the results.

How fast were you shooting those?

It was ~2350 fps out of a 20" factory barrel using 38 grs of IMR 4064

I have 2 E.R. Shaw barrels.
I don't own a borescope.
Ignorance is bliss!!
Both are on hunting rifles.
As long as i remember to tighten the scope rings to the base, i'm perfectly happy with the performance from both.
And i wouldn't hesitate to buy another for a hunting rifle.

I've had several Shaw barrels that shot very well, but that's been thirty or more years ago and before I had a bore scope. I have a pre-'64 Model 70 .30-06 Featherweight that has the washboard road toolmarks, though not as bad as those shown in the earlier post here. Surprisingly, it shoots quite accurately, but copper fouls terribly. I don't know how many rounds it takes for accuracy to be adversely affected as I've never fired more than about twenty or thirty rounds with out cleaning.

I've had a couple of Shaw barrrels over the years. Didn't expect much and wasn't disappointed. The last one was a 257 Roberts on a Savage sporter deer rifle for my son. It settled down after 30 rounds and was a 3/4" consistent shooter without much workup. He thumped several deer over 8 years or so. Problem was that he didn't pick up brass and I got tired of trying to find new. So, I screwed on a 6.5 CM barrel.
I need to get around and put that barrel up for sale.

Had a T/C custom shop barrel that looked nasty also. Could get 3 shots out of it before it was so copper fouled that I had to clean it again. Second one I got shot very well and hardly fouled at all. You hope for the best when you order a barrel.

I still haven't heard anything from Shaw. I may call Monday and see if they are interested in seeing the photos I have.

After cleaning the barrel of all copper I shot it 17 times. The photos below tell the story.

And there in lies the problem with economy barrels. Some shoot very well and some are problems from day one. When you buy high quality barrels like Krieger, Bartlein etc the chances of getting a bad barrel are pretty rare.
