This morning we had winds gusting from 15 to 30 mph
after the tornado warnings last night. I tried the Viper SS
in those winds to see how it would fair in the Holly, Co.
wind tunnel. I set up at 1600 as it was easy to set up and
ready. Results were promising. I had to dial in 15 MOA left
windage. Shot nine times. Two shots hit under the plate
between the legs of the stand with one shot hiting the plate
at 12 noon.
Went to the Stagecoach for Pizza and a couple of guys came
by who wanted me to set their 223 Salvage in. I had them
operate the bolt and magazine for me as I am not smart enough
to get the bolt out of a Salvage. Then they shot my Viper SS
and you guessed it, they are ruined for life. The new shooter
put two of two shots on top of each other at 340 yds in the wind.
He could not stop talking about how sweeeet the SS was.
It is now 3 p.m. and I have to take a bench to the one mile
spot and load some more shells.
4:45 p.m. I am set up ready to fire at one mile. No chance of
seeing any dirt fly because it is sunset and a shadow is already
over my two white targets. I dialed in the scope. I wanted to
at least fire a few rounds and see if I could find the hits in the
grass. I fired 4 at the 4 x 4 plate and 4 at the 18 in. plate.
Now to go to the plates and see if I can find my hits on the ground
and see how she grouped.
I parked the gator about 50 yards short of the two targets and
walked watching the ground. Luckily the big 142 gr. SMK kicked up
a lot of turf. Each four shot group had two shots very close to
each other and the windage was pretty good.
I will be ready Wednesday to dial in closer and hopefully the wind
will be calm and visibility good.
These were the shots at the 18 in. plate
These were shot at the 4' x 4' plate
2 close ones from one 4 shot group
2 close shots from the other 4 shot group
The groups were about 45 yards short. I will hopefully get r' done Wednesday if conditions allow.
The Mark 4 leupold was setting at 74 MOA from my 100 yd zero. I was about 50 yards short but
Wednesday it may be on. Just depends on the wind, temp, humidity, rotational spin of the earth,
moon's gravitaional effect, the Big George Halo electronic field.
If I have visibility problems I will slip a March on her in place of the Leupold.
