Setting up 6mm BR for 200 yards

I am rebarreling a Hall action with a 6mmBR barrel. I have a 250 barrel for varmints, and I want to have a barrel just for punching paper. I have a gunsmith in mind, but now I need to know what barrel to get. I'll probably be shooting between 68 and 80 grainers for that yardage. So should I go with a 1:9 or 1:12? Also what length barrel would you go with? Weight does not matter as I am not competing at this point. I had considered setting up for a 5-600 yards and shooting something in the 95 grain range, but I only shoot at that distance a few times a year. I've read about everything I can, and now just need some specific direction.

I would talk to the smith about your questions but if I were to make that decision I would go with the 1-9 at 24" due to the chance that you might want to shoot a heavier bullet in the future.

Recommended twist rates from Berger's website:

68 Target FB 13 Twist
69 Varmint High BC FB 12 Twist
80 Varmint FB 12 Twist
87 Hunting VLD 10 Twist
90 Hunting VLD 10 Twist
95 Target BT 10 Twist

I use my 6 BR with 68 Berger Target FB and 70 Nosler Ballistic Tips, in a 13 twist Broughton, 26 inch barrel. That was the range of bullet weights that I gave to Tim North at Broughton and he said to use the 13 twist. A buddy called and ordered one for 70 to 80 grain bullets and Tim told him to go with the 12 twist. Both rifles will put bullets of their respective weight ranges in one teeny hole at 100 and 200 yards. but I've never tried 80's in mine.

I suggest that you narrow your barrel makers down to the likes of Broughton or Bartlien and give them a call to discuss twist rate, barrel length and contour, based on your intended uses. You will find them most helpful in making your decisions. These guys know what they are talking about.

Hope this helps some.

If it was me, I'd get a Max Heavy Varmint profile in 10 twist with a finish length of 24 or 25". Have it chambered in either 6BR or 6BRX with .104 freebore for the BIB 95 flat base. But, hey, that's me.

Thank you for the helpful replies. I hadn't considered BIB, but I probably should. There must be some place that sells them in lots of less than 1000. I am consulting with my gunsmith also about what he recommends, and he says either 1:13.5-14 for the 68's or I could go heavier than normal at 1-200 and get a 1:12 for up to 80's.

I have a 1/12 26 inch that I had set up for 80 grain bergers. I shot it till it was gone. I was always impressed by how it shot. I got another just like it and it shot just the same. Mostly .2s and .1s. So I decided to try some 68 bergers because PV was out of 80s. Without much load work I was getting zeros and 1s. Thats all I use now but dont shoot farther than 200 yards. All Krieger barrels that Krieger put on at their shot.

It seems that the 1:12 could let me experiment with 68-80. I already have a number of bullets in that range. Would you mind mentioning your powder?

The 1:10 with the BIB 95 will set you up fine for 500-600, if you want to cover that.

If you want to ignore it and set up strictly for 200, I'd go with the mid-60s bullets and a 1:14, but I think you'll find that the case is slightly over capacity to be optimal in that role. A 22-100 PPC, 6PPC, or 6 Beggs would be perfect.

As to powder, I like something faster than Varget or R15 for the lighter bullets. H322, Benchmark, 8208 XBR, etc.

trentalan34,
I started with a 12 for my first 6BR, it works great for bullets up to 80gr bullets. see

You can do like me I have a Stiller Diamondback action with a 12, 10 and 8 tw 6BR barrels. If I were going to pick one barrel and one twist, I would go with 8tw, then you can shoot everything.
My main varmint gun is a 6BR 12tw shooting 70 gr Blitzkings.

My 10 twist want shoot 95 VLD Berger, but will shoot 95 Bib"s , 90 gr BT and 87 gr VLD Berger. i am also using 87 Vmax for varmints great longrange varmint bullet.

Get a standard length barrel, have the smith leave it as long as he can. Most of the time 27" or so.

I have a 1 in 12" and I am really happy with it, shoots 68 grain "boutique" bullets great with N135 and Varget as it does with the 80 grain Berger's also. The thing i like about the 1 in 12" is I can still use it to go varmint hunting and load 55 grain Nosler's and load them to 3800 fps with N133 or shoot the 65 grain Vmax with the same powder as the 68's and 80 grainers. A 68 grain Berger FB has the same exact BC as a 65 grain Vmax making a good one to switch back and forth from.
