setting back barrel

I have a 6br with a bat sv action and 1100 rounds through it and was going to send it off and have the barrel set back. I have a brand new barrel also and the smith said that he could set back on the existing barrel and if i sent him the new that he could thread, chamber and set the headspace on it and i would just be able to screw it on when needed. Will i have to buy a barrel vice to do this or is there some other way? And will this even work?

The answer is YES you need a bbl vice and an action wrench. Both are not all that expensive. The smith will probably pin the recoil lug to the action so that it stays put when you remove and install bbls.

The nice thing is that the smith can chamber both bbls so that your brass will interchange. He should also install witness marks on the bbls so that you can tighten the bbl to the same point every time. If he indexes the bbls, scope adjustments for POI changes should be minimal. It is a good system.

All the above said, I assume you are a benchrester or F-Class shooter. If a sling and Irons shooter, the above applies, you just have the front sight to align. That can be managed too. You just need a level on your front sight and that can be used when you install the bbls.

You will need something to hold the barrel tight while your screwing the action back in place...
So, a barrel wrench of some sort, and a barrel vise is needed, or super strong hands !!!
You can make a vise out of a piece of hardwood with the correct hole in it....
Then use a piece of hard wood in the port, to tighten it all up...
Other than that, I see no problems at all with doing it....

Thanks guys, I wish i could call myself a benchrest shooter but i am working on it. When i screw on the other barrel is there a torque spec?

Before i send this thing away, im wondering if i should just get the smith to just install the new barrel and not bother getting the current barrel set back. 1100 rounds with around another 1000 maybe left on it? Any advice?
