Setting back the chamber question

Hi all.

My .284 Shehane has 1100 rounds through the barrel. Would it be a good idea to set the chamber back?

Does it still shoot?

IMO, round count alone shouldn't be the determining factor.

I will say that in my experience, setting back a chamber has limited usefulness in a match rifle. But, my experience covers a relatively narrow range of calibers and applicability so take that for what's it worth... :-)

Personally I wound only set back a barrel if your doing the work. If your paying go with a new barrel.

Thanks guys.

It still shoots well. Gunsmith says the throat looks fairly good. So I guess for the moment I will just keep on shooting :)

Let the barrel tell you when to set it back or better yet install a new barrel. You may want to get another barrel blank on order so when the accuracy goes below your threshold to save you time.

Yes thanks. The next barrel is already on its way ;)

Others I'm sure have had different results
For me setting back a match barrel was disappointing. factor in the cost of the smith, components trying to find the accuracy that was there when new was a waste of time. It just wasn't there
Ended up with a new barrel and another chamber cost

I had 3 Shehanes. Doing the 4th when the new reamer gets here. 1700 rounds to 3200. When they died. IMO setbacks are disappointing also. Pat

Have read that the time to do this is BEFORE the barrel goes South, like at 750-800 rds.

Might be a bit late to the game if expect there to be a real life extension for the work performed.
Doing your own lathe work? Only cost is your time. Paying top-drawer gunsmithing rates? Why not just go with a new barrel and be sure...
