Set back and re-chamber question

I have a great shooting 6X47L rifle with a 28" HV Bartlein barrel. The rifle has aprox. 1200 rounds down the tube and is just starting to show signs of cracking at the throat. I'm wondering if it would be wise to send it back to the smith and have him set it back and re-chamber it. It's such a great shooter I'd like to see if I can get 3,000 rounds out of it. Last time a set back a barrel is was less than 1/2 the cost to re-barrel and thought it might be a good idea.

More than likely a set back is going to cost the same as a new chamber, unless the barrel was an exceptional barrel, I'd ensure my chambering fee wasn't wasted on a tomatoe stake. Basically, barrels are consumables, use them and buy a new one. If this barrel was set back once, you'll want to take a big bite of the tenon to get ahead of the throat.

If it were me and I've done it a few times. It's really not worth it. It also depends how serious you are. If you compete in registered matches no way. If it's local stuff or just for fun and varmints then maybe
It will help eek out a little more life from it but not so that you could trust it to take to a match or anything.
You will have to decide if it's worth the cost. It could help keep it alive for a practice barrel

I had one set back and it didn't work, then I tried it one more time on a different barrel, didn't work. even if the third time was the charm, I wasted $400 to get one more that did work $600.00???. Not worth it. Get a new barrel. You could re-crown see if it helps any. Oh when you order the new barrel, tell them you want a good one.:)

Years ago, my smith said that if the bore has little firecracking, the barrel can be re-chambered. This was on a 6ppc, and he estimated I might get another 600 - 800 rounds thru it before accuracy went south again.

Thanks for all the input, I'll just keep shooting it until I need a new barrel. I just thought it was a good way to get an extra 800-1000 rounds down the tube. Appreciate all the input. I'll order another barrel next year. thanks

Good Plan. When you get ready to sell that old fire cracked useless barrel let me know.
