Service Rifle/Match Rifle Prone Position (need to get taller)

After many years I am back trying to shoot across the course. Man, is it a humbling experience. For the first time in my life I am facing really being awful at something I used to be really good at... After 25 years of playing golf my back finially went south and took my pelvis with it, and after a couple years of physical therpay I ma doing really now, but I am older and by back just isn't as flexible.

At the very end of my highpower career I had pretty much adopted a smallbore prone position, as I have a really hard time looking out of the top of my eye, I much prefer my head being more vertical.

No matter what sling setting I try I cannot get my head up AND get my right arm on the ground. If my left arm is bent to facilitate a high position my right arm is too short and I fall out to the right.

Help.

I, too, have spine issues and also hate looking out the top of my eye socket. I flattened my body more to the ground (less roll on my side I guess), pulled my hand stop back 1". Seemed to do the trick but it takes a while to get out of position and off the ground. Briefly considered going F-class but just can't give up the coat and sling.
Good luck!

Jim OConnell shoos a tall prone position extraordinarily well. He would be the man to talk to about how he constructs his position.

A big part of it is keeping your butt low like a smallbore shooter and not kicking your right knee forward which raises your butt.

Pull that Hand stop back closer to you.. Think of the forearm and elbow as a hinge. The more the hand stop comes back the higher the Triangle you make with the Bicept and Forearm gets closer to each other and there fore increasing the elevation of the rifle and body.

I went from a what I call normal elevation to super low over a 5 year time span and now my neck is in bad shape so Now I am slowely working my way back up to get a more upright position for less pain. The back Injury has really affected my Sitting rapid. I have to sit very upright.. Unlike most of these guys who are bent over like they have some sort of Hinge it seems.... Putting a extra block in front of the magwell allowed me to get my rifle more upright with my hand and elbow on my knee.

Hey brother. Thanks for the reply. I get the left arm and short handstop. I have the thing back as far as it will go. The the problem is my aright arm is now not tall enough holding the grip. ????

What rifle or type of stock are you using? Getting that butt plate up into the side of your neck will help you drop your trigger side shoulder a little more, lowering the elbow, in addition to getting your head a little more vertical. On my adjustable stock I run about 3/4" outboard cast to bring it closer to centerline, SR can't use an adjustable (other than length now) so I went with an A2 and get it real tight up in there.

You could also try shortening your LOP, 12-13" is a good starting point for most average height men. This will close up the angle on the trigger side arm, possibly giving you the extension you need.

Maybe post some pics of you in position so we can see exactly what's going on.

It is an Ar15 space gun. The stock is as short as you can get it. And I need a good postion for service rifle also, so too many tricks really won't work.

Hmm.. I am going to have to go out and pull my hand stop way back to see or feel if I can duplicate what your getting. You should be able to reach the grip just fine. Seems odd but I will check it out, as I just cant picture it in my head.

Due to damage in my left hand and wrist I can only shoot prone in a low position. I started making a riser tube to attach to the bottom of my space gun tube. This added 21/4"in height. I also make a tall ladder front sight base which along with a raised rear sight base gives me a good upright head position for my 60 year old eyes. I also use these tubes and sight bases on my prone rifles.

I literally feel your pain. 30 years of welding- basically looking straight down. About 5 to 7 rounds in slow prone and my neck starts burning bad. Had a the L5 disc repaired 8 years ago and feel like I need morphine to get through the sitting rapid. It is just too much fun to give up though. Keep plugging away at it and I bet you can figure out a way to make it work for you again.

try adding an elbow pad (volleyball knee pads) in your right arm and as others mention, a more adjustable stock for the match rifle. like an elesio butt piece? I could see you adding more stuffing to your mat in the elbow landing area too as long as you don't make a "hold" or pit for your elbow. I use a creedmoor mat with double foam in the front..also choose higher real estate on your firing point if you can...just a thought. as for the service gun in can only think of the thicker elbow pad thing along with choking all the way back to the delta ring on your handguards. hope this helps.
cheers,
doc

Another adjustment that might work for both MR and SR is move your sling side elbow out from directly under the rifle. Just don't let Ken Roxburgh walk by and see, lol!
