Sendero 2 300 win mag help

I’m looking for advise on factory selections that anyone has had luck with out of the Sendero IIs. I’m in the process of getting dies for 300 win mag but want to acquire some brass with factory first loads first. I just got finished testing out the HSM 185 VLDs with pretty poor results (2-3” at 100 yds).

Any suggestions and feedback is appreciated.

Thanks

Federal gold medal match 190 smk

Then use the brass for reloading whatever bullet you desire.

If you want hunting factory ammo, I've had good luck with Federal Premium loaded with Barnes TSX/TTSX and Federal Fusion line of ammo has always been accurate.

2 to 3" at 100 yards is not that good. My hunting 300winmag would shoot most factory stuff around 2 to 2.5" until I tried the one's I've mentioned.

The Gold medal Match 190smk I used for my target rifle and the brass ended up being extremely uniform and the difference in weight from 240 pieces was less than 3 grains !

I have a Sendero SF 2 in 300 Win Mag I picked up a couple years ago .

How many rounds you got down the tube? Still got the factory trigger?

I went the Federal factory load route. Didn't shoot very good until I weight sorted the loaded rounds and then using an RCBS collet puller, I partially pulled the 180 gr then seated it touching lands in my rifle. After that, 5 shot groups hover around an inch.

The Federal blue box cheap stuff is what I bought. Turns out I think they were seconds or something. A couple of the bullets had 2 cannelures, and the charge weights from the couple I pulled apart were all over the map.

All I use that load for is coyote anyway. That and barrel break in.

If I had it to over again, I'd buy the Berger Ammunition loaded with 215 gr Hybrid Target. Little pricey, but the Norma brass you get will range in volume from 95-95.5 gr. And it'll be allot more consistent than the Federal stuff if you're going long with your rifle. Not that the Federal is bad, it's actually pretty decent. Just the Norma is much better The Federal will run between 91-92 gr internal volume.

When I got my rifle dialed in with my handloads, it shoots those Berger 215 hybrid targets right around .16"- .2" at 100 yards.

Good luck with it

I appreciate the feedback. I'll go ahead and try some factory federal ammo and see how it shoots.
I agree 2-3" is horrible. I am only loading 308 at this time so this will be my next adventure.

Take your rifle to a good gunsmith if you haven’t already and have it looked over if you are not sure how to check it out.

Quite a few times the factory crowns on the muzzles barrel are done poorly. Also check the bedding/fit of the stock and check your action screws. These minor things can ruin accuracy out of the box.

I also assume you tried a different scope and made sure the mounts/rings are tight? Seen plenty of scopes that will not hold zero.

The barreled action is in a mcmillan stock with aluminum pillars. The scope base and badger rings are all torqued properly. Running a NF ATACR that is zeroed.

The trigger breaks at a clean 2.5lbs.

I'm thinking the throat is too long for the VLDs and not shooting them bc of the seating depth from HSM.
I'm going to give Federal Premium a try loaded with 180 accubonds and 180 parititions and go from there.
I shoot a good amount and felt great about the shots. I'm thinking its a simple bad ammo scenario.
Shooting this weekend with the new stuff so will keep you updated.

The throat on a factory Sendero is designed to not be reload friendly. Mine is so long I gave up trying to reach.

Quite the opposite, for me. But then I'm shooting heavy for caliber bullets in my 300 win mag.

Short throat, Saami spec built rifles are to me reload unfriendly, but they typically do shoot factory SAAMI spec factory ammo decent...

New or used rifle ?

Never had much sucess shooting factory match ammo through my 300WM Sondero. I did finally find an outstanding load both precision and consistiency shooting the 208 AMax's and 75-77 gr of H1000 with a .025" bullet jump.

I’d start with whatever the military favors in 300 Win Mag, which is probably online, maybe even on this site. Likey similar to GMM Sierra 190’s. The military has never favored the longest bullets for caliber available. Niether the heaviest, this despite pursuing very long shots.

As an aside, the commercially available $10,000+ Remington XM 2010 (includes good optic) vetted and selected by the U.S. military is also a model 700 long action chambered in 300 Win Magnum with a Remington hammer forged (but 5R) barrel of yours approximate profile. Not even a Rem custom shop creation.

No doubt the services pay much more for it than $10,000. Point being that your “exact” same factory-built barreled action is the chosen foundation on which to attach the “deemed” best tactical stock and scope money can buy. It’s good, well beyond good, the near universal choice for custom gunmakers, even though most of them claim to be able to find fault with, and improve them. Doubtful.

Simo is onto something...

I've had good luck with RL-33 and 240smk, but my lot of RL-33 ended up being faster burning than Quickload suggested. I found Alliant data with RL-33 and 220smk, and it was pretty much spot on compared to Quickload.

Here is a link to that Alliant manual...

Also had good luck with H-1000 and 208amax and 220smk.

H-4831 worked superbly with 178amax. Very accurate.

It’s used not exact on round count but the bore looks good.

When my Rem 700 Sendero 300 Win mag groups opened up, the action had loosened up a little bit and I switched to Boretech cleaning products to get more copper out of the barrel. Groups tightened up right after I took care of those things. +1 for Federal Gold Match ammo or Berger ammo.

I have been having troubles with my sons Remington 700 Tactical 300 Win Mag aswell. They do that trinity finish in the bore also. As you shoot it is clears out in sections. This make a inconsistent bore diameter and puts stress on the bullets. I bought the Tubbs final finish bullet package and followed the directions. BOOM!!! Velocities stabilized and it went from 2” groups to 1/2” with same loads at 100 yards.
