Semper Fidelis...

75 years ago, the Marines landed on Iwo Jima and defeated the Japanese forces. Brutal was not the word to describe the yard by yard fighting. My uncle Richard (who I have the honor to be named after) was a BAR Gunner. He never talked to me about it but once. I was home on leave from my first tour in RVN, and going back in 30 days. No gory details, just that dank, foetid smell of the dead and the jungle.

I salute you today, along with all the brave Marines, some living, most dead these days for their service to their country...

From the booklet titled Iwo Jima, © 1945 -- "Pausing...to dedicate the Third Division's cemetery, but speaking for all the...Marine dead, Major General Erskine voiced the sentiment of all Iwo survivors....'Long after those who lament their immediate loss are themselves dead, these men will be mourned by the Nation.'"

It's easy for me to think most Americans, today, are too self-absorbed to consider the sacrifice of those men, and others like them.

First off, Semper Fi to all my fellow Devil Dogs. The WW2 Marines are my heroes. John Basilone, a Medal of Honor recipient from the battle of Guadalcanal was killed on yesterdays date in 1945 on Iwo Jima. The flag was raised on Mount Suribachi on Feb 23rd. 3 of the 6 flag raisers were killed in the battle.

It really bothers me that their sacrifices are not appreciated today. Today's youth are not taught the sacrifices that were made for the freedoms or to appreciate and respect them instead we have and others are trying to take away. I can't believe Socialism is even tolerated in this country today and that they are not being tried for treason. IMHO, WW2 vets and what they did and sacrificed is being spit on by the left today.
