Selling or trading Guns

I have done several estates. I look at the firearm, try to get an accurate selling price. I pay 50 percent cash at the time. I sell them, mainly on Gunbroker, and split any profit after out of pocket expenses. Most people underestimate the time it will take to do a proper sale. Pictures, detailed write up, answering questions, completing the sale, and shipping average 4 hours per gun.
That's the hidden cost of selling, time. What's it worth to the seller?

You don't need an FFL to ship your gun, you just have to ship it to one.
It costs you $50 to get to a place to ship?

It depends. If it’s a handgun then you need an FFL to ship. If it’s a long gun then it can go via USPS.

Both Fedex and UPS changed their rules and you can only ship firearms and firearm accessories if you have an account and have an FFL on file and associated with the account. You can’t even ship a stock or trigger now via UPS without an FFL.

I’ve been charged between $20-$100 for an FFL to ship an item.

All that said. Shipmygun.com is an option now and their prices can‘t be beat. They are very economical to ship out guns.

He's talking about a long gun, though. And you can ship parts via UPS.

Based on their new rules you need to be properly licensed. Basically you can only send scopes.

“Firearm” will have the same definition as set forth in Title 18, Chapter 44, and Title 26, Chapter 53, of the United States Code.

“Firearm Part” is any part or component of a Firearm that does not by itself meet the definition of a “Firearm.” By way of example only, Firearm Parts include, but are not limited to, barrels, stocks, grips, firing pins, sights, and magazines/clips.

“Firearm Products” means Firearms and Firearm Parts. The term Firearm Product does not include scopes.

UPS accepts packages containing Firearm Products for shipment only as a contractual service and only from Shippers who are licensed importers, licensed manufacturers, licensed dealers, or licensed collectors (as defined in Title 18, Chapter 44 of the United States Code) to authorized recipients, as outlined in an approved UPS agreement for the transportation of Firearm Products.

The shipper must comply with and must ensure that each shipment containing Firearms or Firearm Parts complies with all UPS requirements as well as all federal, state and local laws applicable to the shipper, recipient, and package, including, without limitation, age restrictions.

OP. This is what you do. Post the gun for sale on a forum like this one. When you sell it, break it in half since its an O/U and put it in the shortest box that work. The buyer is going to pay for the gun, shipping, insurance, and their own FFL. Take it to the US Post Office and mail it. Take the money and enjoy. Its as simple as that. Its happening a million times every day all over the USA.

My patience has long since gone. It just hurts when you trade a $1K gun for $500 and then see it sold for $1500. I was just surprised when I was getting low balled so badly. I can't even get a counter offer out of most dealers. I have been unhappy with every Gun Broker deal because of the fees and hassle. Did I say I have no patience?
Read your last sentence and then you'll understand the issue.

Quick and market value will not align. Period.

So you have a decision to make. Learn patience and deal with hassles. Dump it cheap and move on. Keep it and eventually someone else will decide between the first two options.

This right here. I will not get involved in another estate, FFL or not, unless I get paid by the hour. Way too much hastle for too little reward.

That isn't what UPS says, though.

"The United Parcel Service recently altered its rules regarding the shipping of firearms and firearm parts, which has already begun to affect the gun industry.

Under the new policy, UPS says it “does not accept any firearms, frames or receivers, or partially complete, disassembled, or nonfunctional frames or receivers (as defined by the new federal regulation) unless those items have been identified and given a serial number in compliance with federal requirements.”

UPS confirmed with Pew Pew Tactical that its shipping policies have been updated and that the company will no longer ship unserialized frames or receivers per the ATF’s upcoming regulation change in August."

From UPS:

"Prohibited Firearm Products Shipments
UPS does not accept automatic weapons, including machine guns, for shipment.
UPS does not accept Firearms or Firearm Parts for shipment internationally. Replicas or simulated Firearms are not accepted for shipment internationally except as a contractual service.
UPS only accepts Firearms (including Firearm mufflers/Firearm silencers and a “frame” or “receiver” as defined under federal law and regulations) that have been identified and bear a serial number in a manner that complies with federal law and regulations.
UPS does not accept packages that contain such Firearm Parts that can be assembled to form a full Firearm."

I've literally sent stocks, barrels, etc. through UPS since their rules changed, declared it to the the counter, and they asked if it included all the parts to assemble a firearm, I say no, and they ship.

As a gun dealer, I don't think I have to knock every customer's head off to be successful. In fact, if my customer has something I think I could sell, I try to give him fair market (at whole sale anyway) value for his trade. I'm still making retail on the one he's buying from me. I can then sell his trade for a profit also. Fair deal to both parties.

You don't have to act like a pawn broker to be successful. To do so is short sighted. If you screw over all your customers, you soon won't have any customers.

I have this same trouble when trading cars, I think my trade in is worth what I paid for it! I have reconsidered my offer on the gun trade and will see what the dealer says. At least I now have 3 different dealers involved. Been an interesting thread, thanks.

Your local UPS counter may have shipped it, but it’s against their current policy. Not all people will be as lucky as you. And I’m also guessing that if you need to file a claim they’ll point to their current rules and make it difficult for you to recover any losses.

I had a fantastic relationship with an FFL that shipped a few guns for me. I was glad to pay them their FFL fee and the shipping rates they quoted to not have the hassle of doing it myself. And I knew they did everything properly. Unfortunately, they closed up shop a few months ago. I haven't sold any that needed to be shipped since then. I have consigned a few at a different LGS that takes 20% commission on the final sale price. I get a little less on the consignment guns, but no headaches or hassles so that's worth something. While I'm not trading and selling necessarily to make a profit, I don't want to lose my shirt either. What little I've lost, I chalk it up to the cost of owning and enjoying something for a while and then letting it go to someone else to enjoy.

I also quoted from their page. If it doesn’t contain all assemble able parts they will ship it.
