Selling or trading Guns

I have been a pest on the site. I think I want a 223 with a magazine, maybe a 10 shot magazine. I am a member of the NUT brotherhood. So I find the Savage Scout rifle, went to look at one today and it would work for me. I am an old guy and need to get rid of guns, not buy new ones. Tried to trade a pretty nice o/u trap gun. I was willing to trade a $1500 trap gun for a $1000 rifle. Dealer wanted me to give it to him, not interested in dealing at all. How in heck do you thin the herd? Or do you have to give em away? The regulations add $200 to any mail order/on line deal and you have to find a local FFL to handle the sale. How do you sell a gun or two?

Gun dealers need to make a profit to stay in business. If you want to sell to individuals, remember they can go anywhere and pay what it is worth, so what is the incentive to buy from you? Accept that fact and go from there.

It all depends. My local firearms forum is a good place to sell some hard to find handguns.

But for bolt actions and nice shotguns, it's a terrible place to get even close to decent money. So for nice bolt actions, I'm on other big forums that I list them and just add in a little to help cover shipping costs.

It's more effort, but find specialty online forums for your different types of guns.

Or sell on consignment at your biggest LGS

Put them on consignment and when they sell get what you want?
Consignment requires guns going back in the books. If they don't sell, you have to re background check to remove from dealer. So let's say you have a gun from years ago that is not currently on the books in your name. It would be if it doesn't bring your asking price. This is why it's BS IMO.

It's a tradeoff, a low price by a gun dealer relieves one of the hassle of state, local and federal regs and the sale and shipping. I've sold guns here and then had my FFL handle everything including shipping for $70.

$50 bucks each to the 2 FFl's, shipping, Gun Broker fees, that leaves about $50 bucks for all the driving @ 50 cents a mile!
You don't need an FFL to ship your gun, you just have to ship it to one.
It costs you $50 to get to a place to ship?

I am not a lawyer, although I do follow 'armed attorneys' on YouTube. The current administration rewrite of the definition of dealer (aka engaged in the business) puts in peril all private traders and transfers.

By the exact verbage of atf new rule, even the liquidation of long held collections could raise a flag if that occurs with new acquisitions. And why consignment agreements, to me and as @6BRA pointed out, are tricky.

This is why scotus action on reversing Chevron deference was so important. It is a first step to reigning in the alphabet bureaucracy.

If you YouTube, check out those Houston criminal defense attorneys that specialize in 2a issues.

I' have let my local dealer sell a few of my firearms. He may sell them in the store or post them on auction sites. He gets 20% off the top. The 20% saves me from having to deal with potential buyers, doing the FFL paperwork & paying the associated fees, and covers the shipping to the new buyer. IMO it's a fair arrangement for everyone.

Additionally, if you sell a firearm to someone and they later have some kind of issue, they will be right back at you regardless of who/what was at fault. If you sell through your dealer, it's a clean transfer with no headaches.

I am an old guy also have been downsizing for a number of years. I've sold several rifle and pistols all through my local smith who I have dealt with for over 30 years.

Could I get better prices trying to sell the stuff on my own, probably. But I want to afford the hassle of having to meet guys to inspect the firearm, negotiating a price, potential on-going issue should the firearm not meet their expectations, and assuring the sale is legal. My smith takes care of all of that. So, I guess it depends on how much value you place on peace of mind and keeping your life simple.

One other point; don't forget that the dealer has to keep the firearm on the self for an indeterminate amount of time. Given interest rates today, inventory costs a lot of money.

My patience has long since gone. It just hurts when you trade a $1K gun for $500 and then see it sold for $1500. I was just surprised when I was getting low balled so badly. I can't even get a counter offer out of most dealers. I have been unhappy with every Gun Broker deal because of the fees and hassle. Did I say I have no patience?

I have done several estates. I look at the firearm, try to get an accurate selling price. I pay 50 percent cash at the time. I sell them, mainly on Gunbroker, and split any profit after out of pocket expenses. Most people underestimate the time it will take to do a proper sale. Pictures, detailed write up, answering questions, completing the sale, and shipping average 4 hours per gun.

Shooting and hunting have been a hobby for well over 60 years. I've had quite a few very nice rifles, pistols and revolvers over the years. A few I have sold or traded and made a buck or two, most I went backwards on. BUT, entertainment costs money. I've had bragging rights to some very nice toys, trips and dogs. That is worth a fortune. I've had very good fortune selling on this site. Box it up correctly, send it to an FFL thru USPS, done deal. I've got a pocket full of memories not wishes!!
