Seeking advise on a savage action

I'm in the market for a Remington 700 sa but yesterday i came across a savage 10 trophy hunter sa. Its scopedd with a vortex diamondback which is if no use to me. But the action is clean and bottom metal is good as well. Dude wants $350 and thats firm. Does that sound on par, or should i keep looking? Im not overly familiar with savages

Cabelas used to run a Christmas time special on the Savage FV for about $329.00 in a few different calibers. You can switch the barrels out for almost any caliber going through Northland Shooters supply. Savage actions have been good to us.
 
Sounds like a good deal. But if you plan on replacing the trigger or stock, you need to be aware of which version of bolt release it has.

The top bolt release version looks like the one in 1911nut's link to NSS. The milled flat on the right rear, just in front of the bolt handle, is the difference.

The bottom bolt release version does not have that flat and is usually cylindrical in that area. The bolt release is integral with the trigger guard in that version.

Many stocks are now universal and will accommodate both versions, but that wasn't always the case.

One of the best triggers, the Rifle Basix SAV-2, will not work with a bottom bolt release. The SAV-1 will, but it's not quite as nice.
 
As long as your ok with the quirks of a Savage action, I’d say it’s a good enough deal. Limited aftermarket trigger options and heavy bolt lift etc... and if it is a bottom bolt release the trigger option become more limited.
 
I did a 20 practical a few years ago wi th h a savage action top bolt release a d jt turned out nice. The savages do have some corks but it functions. This model 10 has the bottom bolt release. Ive been looking for an Action to play with so i can dd a rifle for the wife. All the rem 700s im seeing are either crazy priced or non existant so thats why im considering the savage 10
 
I bought my first Savage a model 10-t a few years back because of Remington's problems and have been very happy with it... It has the accu trigger and I can live with it , the headspace is very tight but I reload for it so I can simply load the brass back .001 it shoots so good I don't want to send it back although Savage said they would be glad to open up the headspace under warranty but like I said it shoots good and I don't want anything that may change that.....

I figured if I shoot it enough to burn the barrel out I will address it when I swap it out.. It's bottom release but I can live with that to... It shoots as good as I can shoot it , normally with handloads a 1/2 to 3/4 inch five shot groups at 100 yards my best was .313 which isn't bad for a factory barrel .308... You can definitely spend more and get less...

It really comes down to what you're going to use it for.... I definitely wouldn't say it's a super accuracy rifle by any means.... For a range toy , hunting rifle etc it would be fine.... Mines heavy but it's only a range toy so I enjoy it.... It's pretty much exactly what I bought it for.... If you were to install a good barrel and bed it into a decent stock I think it would be very nice shooter...
 
We each have our own likes and dislikes but I'll take a Savage over any Remington every day. Two non-designated target actions set up as ELR pistols, a few rifles set up for the local 1000 yard matches and a 338 Lapua that set an ELR World record at 2158 yards with a factory barrel. Accuracy wise they are proven, not as smooth as my Sons Curtis or Bighorn actions but for the money I don't think they can be beat.

We only shoot the longrange matches and am happy with the way they perform. I'm not a trigger snob, I have triggers from a couple ounces to 3lbs plus, I think all my savages are around a pound which i like. Friends with Remingtons usually end up having things done to them to improve them.

I realize this is predominately a BR site and Savages may not be highly regarded for that game so it might be good to think what the gun will be used for. I'm still of the opinion accuracy is in the chamber and barrel and the other parts can be changed to suit the shooter while chasing a bit tighter group.

I have a number of Savage Target action and have had no issues with any of them.
I also have a few Remingtons. It is true the parts are more readily available for Remington’s in a wide variety, but the way that the Savage is set up with right bolt left eject, I really like.
 
I have 5 Savage 110 actions and they have treated me well. I am a DIY so the barrel nut allows me to change barrels. However, you will never be entirely happy with the Savage trigger., or even the aftermarket Savage triggers.

If that rifle is a top bolt release, is it a buy!
 
I like Savage because I can swap out barrels myself. Most of my shooting is varmint hunting. If you go with Rem 700 you could go with the barrel nut system and do the same. I know people will laugh but I have bought some cheap barrels and shot groups in the .2's. There are some different size actions that Savage uses so beware of that when you buy a stock, action screw spacing is different. Northland shooter supply can help.
 
I have one target rifle built on a Savage "Target" action, which is my first and likely my last Savage. While I like the rifle and it shoots great, there are just too many shortcoming in it's design and function (heavy bolt lift and close, no truly good options for replacement triggers...). The major advantage to a Savage is being able switch barrels yourself and now you can do that with a Remington. Not that Remingtons are that great anymore either, at least from what I read about the new ones.
