Seeing the target at 1000 / optic or spotting scope?

Do you rely on your optic (high power 40 and above) or your optic and a spotting scope? Just curious how one would compete in 600yds or a 1000yds with scopes down in the 25 power range. Got my eye on a 60 power spotting scope fro

Sounds like you're not familiar with pits, pulling the target down, putting on a large high contrast spotting disk and running the target back up??

Or preferably e-targets :)

I use 8-1/2” x 11” targets I print on heavy white paper with just the X, and 10 rings for 600 Yards, and a few more rings for 300 yards. I add an orange 1” dot at the center. With these targets, I can see shots most of the time at 300 yards with my rifle scope set as low as around 40X. With the scope at 55X, I may ‘detect’ a group of shots at 600 yards, but very difficult to see individual shots.

Bottom line –
For practice shooting, I use a Caldwell Target camera at 600 yards, and have used it once at 1000 yards – the camera works great.

At matches, I set my scope at 55 and may have to turn it down to as low as 25 depending on the mirage. The score is reported by the target crew with spotters and score markers on the paper target for each shot (F-Class), which are easily seen with any scope with 20x power or so. If electronic targets are used, the target, points of impact, and score are displayed on a smart phone or tablet.

Good luck!

Im shooting for group or score ... Although, Never at the same time it seems :(
Consistent Poa gets me decent groups.

As a sling shooter I use a 27x Kowa spotting scope, and either an 8-32 NF or a 10-60 March. I'm looking at the question a little differently. I try and save my shooting eye for just that, shooting. My non-dominate eye is used for watching conditions, etc.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

I don't think the op understands what happens during an NRA long range or mid range match. Read here that after every shot the target comes down and pit service puts a spotter disc in the bullet hole that stays till after the next shot. Bench rest sighters are spotted also but don't happen during record string. Most high power shooters use a 25 + or minus wide angle to score. Like previous response if you are fun shooting at long range get a camera or a drone to spot your shots or use very small steel target in the dirt to spot the dust puff.

When I want to see bullets at 600 an a 1000yds not during a match I set this camera system up a t the target an monitoring at the line.

Camera systems will show bullet holes at 600 or 1000 yd. Alternatively, the use of splatter targets such as the 18" Shoot-N-C can easily render shots visible out to 600 yd or so. One possibility is that the OP may not be familiar with the shot markers and scoring discs used in F-Class. If so, there should be no issue visualizing the spotting disc/scoring disc with a 20-25X rifle scope, even at 1000 yd. It may dance around quite a bit if the mirage is heavy, but you can still see it.

Lefty - if you already have the Vortex GE, my advice would be not to spend your money on an even higher-priced rifle scope at this point. There are many F-Class shooters using that scope with excellent success. If you think it has a problem (i.e. gets foggy above 25-30X), call Vortex, they will take care of you. I think you would benefit much more from a decent spotting scope, something like one of the Kowa models, than a higher-end rifle scope.

Get a KOWA spotting scope laerger than 60mm you will not be disappointed. Various eyepieces are available from long eye relief to variable power.

Someone had a heck of a sale on the Kowa's earlier this year. Had I not just bought the cheap but decent to ME Konus, I would have bought one. I may later.
