When your on a range with other people shooting targets/steel 40" away directly in front of target is a no go. That's why I put kine a good 15' to the side and back so there is zero change of hitting it and use the 8MP quality and VF zoom so it looks like it's right in front of the target and crystal clear.

If I was the only one shooting than 40" sure would be fine.

See how it works to be able to back up the camera. The cameras only cost $28 and are about the size on an olive so maybe 1 flyer in 1000 shots might hit it I'm not worried too much about this! Just have a spare and a roll of tape. 2 wires to twist together. Anymore I try to gravitate to the KISS systems when possible.

Hold yer horses! it is best to get a standalone camera and then a separate transmitter. The one you have in the link is cooled by the drone rotors. So once you put it on 200mw for distance it will probably fry on you unless you mount an external mini12v cooling fan.

The transmitter I got is designed to go in rc plane wings so it has a heat synch and built in cooling fan. (maxsolo)

As far as cameras go you probably have a 1.8mm lens which has a wide field of view. I have a 2.1mm which tightens things up but then I learned the lenses unscrew and can be replace with a 12mm lens which should be the ticket. I get one in a few days so i will update.

Do you have it on the highest setting? What distance? I will get the zoom tomorrow or sat. Will post right away - anxious to test it

Well maybe the drone guys I talked to about heat were acting on the safe side. We will fix the fov issue..give me a day or two!

Eureka hallelujah etc!! The 16mm $6 zoom lens worked like a charm! ( $6 delivered??!!) here is pic of 6mm holes taken from 10 feet in my shop with not great lighting. The lens threads vs body threads are a bit sloppy so I put in some telfon tape. Once i get adjusted I will lay on a couple of drops of hot glue. You have to screw-unscrew the lens to dial in focus and there is enough slop to lose the crisp setting without glue. fyi. So I think the prototype is ready for the final range test next week!

What is your battery time this setup lasts? 640 resolution definitely didn't do it for me, especially shooting precision rimfire at distance.

Well i did a test today with the new lens that can easily see 6mm holes 10 ft away. The little battery was at 12.7 volts when I started and 4 hrs later running at high transmit it was only down to 12.3v. The transmitter works to 6v. So i'd say it is good for all day without thinking more..

Then you would be out a whopping 34 bucks! Any idea what angle the 6mm bullet is at when descending down at on a 1000td target? You can put cam off to the side too.

edit: no need to glue the zoom! the lens that comes with camera comes with a plastic knurled lock ring. Just take it off and put on the zoom and then you can twiddle with it to get crispest focus and then lock the lens in place. Pic is at about 9 ft in my loading room crappy light but can discern .22 sized hole easily. Note again that looking at screen with your eyeballs is cleaner than a pic of the screen.

FPV cameras and transmitters work amazingly well for long range steel target applications. The higher the TVL rate of the camera the better. I build and sell these units at local gun shows and occasionally ship one out. I've sold over 40 units so far as a package with a stand alone monitor and cell phone receiver included. Thus far I've only had one consumer state they could not get the system to work properly, still unsure as to why as the customer has yet to contact me for support. I can tell you from experience during my R&D process that a 600mw transmitter is more than sufficient for transmission and reception out to 2km. The most common mistakes I've seen from users is powering on the transmitter without first installing an antenna (this burns the chip set up quickly), some folks don't read the instructions I provide and are disappointed that IOS (Apple) wont support an app for the cell phone connection box. Apps like GO FPV and FPV viewer are only supported by android platforms. The other mistake I see folks make is not elevating the camera and receiver on tall tripods for optimal line of sight reception @ long distance. Make no mistake, FPV as an analog video signal will not be as high quality as commercial Wi-Fi systems but, the cost can be 1/4 and you can see your hits clearly on steel. No need to spend 800 bucks to do the same thing. See here on YouTube for the camera box I came up with:

There ya go..nicely packaged up ! what mm lens do you use in the cam? I have the smallest 12v agm battery can get and now finding out that it will probably run the system for days! Am gonna get a smaller and much lighter lithium battery for my experiment. I mounted my cam on a telescoping magnetic pickup stick because originally I had to get too close to the target. Now with the 16mm lens I can see paper bullet holes easy 10 ft away, or much farther on steel, so I will probably mount cam inside a little pelican box to make it weather proof. Be easier to just buy your all ready figured out package but I like to tinker!!

I use the standard 2.1mm lenses as I want to see multiple targets @ 1000. Having the transmission unit off to the side and about 8 to 10 feet away looking down from a tall tripod to avoid back splash is optimal. If you can find one, pick up an 1800 TVL cam.
