SEB Neo front and back play in top? Help!

Hi,

My SEB NEO seems to have some slight amount of play in the top if I rock it back and forth front to back. If I tighten to tension knobs, there is no play but then the joystick is very tight. As soon as I adjust the tension knobs the slightest amount, the top will exhibit some front to back play. Is this normal? For some reason I didn't notice this before and that's why I am wondering if it is a new issue.

Thanks.

Have you read the manual & exploded drawing?

Let me re-explain briefly about the internals;
There are two sliding plates (X & Y axis) and a teflon sheet inside the housing/coax unit.
The top assembly is secured onto one of the sliding plates (the X axis plate).
The tension screws must give a little pressure onto these plates, and the end tip of the tension screws must go into the slots on the teflon sheet (you can feel it when you adjust/turn the tension screws & moving the joystick in rapid-circular movement... or tighten the tension screws until they 'stop' or can't go deeper, then back off by a very bit).
Teflon is soft and naturally has some 'flexibility', thus you may need to check the tension regularly, for instance once per shooting season, or once a year.
(I use teflon because it gives slickest action and immune to solvents).

As you know the tension can be very easily adjusted on the NEO rests, just by thumb screw.
I also put "dot mark" @ 12 o'clock on the tension screws, for reference purpose.

For the old NEO rests (gen1 & 2), think about one or two seconds movement in analog watch when adjusting the tension. (Or think about one-two clicks adjustment on your scope). IF you over-tighten the joystick operation would also be stiff.

Your question: Is this normal?
Answer: No. Your top must be solid with no movement, IF the tension is (adjusted) right.

Try this:
Loosen the two tension screws for about 3 rotations... move the joystick in rapid-circular movement and re-tighten the tension screws (one by one)....tighten until they can't go deeper (this mean the end tip of the screws go into the slot of the teflon sheet properly)... then check for the joystick smoothness & solidness of the top. (= it's about 'combinations').
Back off by a very bit if it's too stiff, and lock the thumb screws.

*By moving the joystick rapidly in circular motion, the teflon sheet will be "in place" (the end tip of the tension screws will go into the tapered "slot" of the teflon sheet)

Hope this help.
Feel free to ask if you have any problems with your NEO.

I will say that I had this exact problem a few months ago, PM'd Seb (he replied with basically the same answer), and found that it was user error. I hadn't had a problem until I took apart the top to "clean" it... which should have been my first clue.

I adjusted the tension as he indicated and the problem went away.

Just adjusted my Neo last night following the above instructions. Helped out a lot. Before it was pretty stiff. Now shes smooth as silk! Thanks hkfan45 for asking the question and Seb for posting the instructions!

You are welcome '7stubby'. Glad to know you can fine-tune the tension with ease.
