SEATING PROBLEM

I have a 6x47L with the brass only being fired 3 times and the pressure it takes to seat bullets is so hard it deforms the bullet !!!! I have a .272 neck with loaded round of .2695 w/107SMK's. I turned the neck lightly to uniform. I am using a .268 bushing in a custom FL die. It does not have a expander on it. I did just turn the de-cap rod down so I can put a Redding carbide expander on it. My carbide expander is .2415. This isn't enough. A fired case has a great almost vacume fit with a .243 gauge pin, neck sized it is .242. Why would it take soo much pressure to seat bullets with a custom arbor seat tool ????

your bushing may be stamped .268 ..but if it is a Redding it may be two or three thous smaller!!! What is the measured size of the case neck after sizing...your bushing may be squeezzzin em way toooo small....I hav had this happen to me!!!....and OBTW,,,have u champhered the case mouths...if they are rough or have a sharp edge they may be skuffing the bullet on the way in....Roger

Ken Markles' newly designed Inside taper neck reamer,, $24+ ship) with the guide rod that goes thru the flash hole is a terrific tool if the problem is the sharp edge left by the conventional, rocket ship) de-burring tool/ Wilson, etc. Bullets will seat smoothly with no excess resistance, and jacket damage. I too have found "errors" in the sizes/ident markings on some Redding bushings.

It's not the chamfer as I use the K&M tapered case mouth reamer with the pilot stem. Outside neck measure .2629 after sizing.

rmist: Your dimensions are identical to one of my 6BRs' with a .272" no-turn neck, lapua brass out-of-the-box, .268" Redding bushing, loaded round neck dia. .2695" to .270". It may be a stupid question, but is there any chance you have a "doughnut" on the inside of your case neck, at the shoulder juncture? I had a similar problem several yrs. ago, and that was the cause of "hard seating"/ stem was leaving a small ring mark on the ogive. Just a thought, will be interested in what you discover.:)

That's what I was just thinking gunamonth. He has a right smart of neck tension if his re-sized neck is @ .263 and a loaded round neck @ .2695. Probably scraping jacket material pretty hard off the bullets. Bill

OK, Now you have got me wondering as well. I just measured my bushing and it was a .268 with calipers. I had to use a magnifier to see the stamped numbers. I re measured my sized case neck OD. I must have just typed it wrong but it is at .266 now I just sized three more cases and the OD is .266 my necks are .013 thick. Not sure what size bushing to use now ??? The .268 is the largest I have now. I even thought the bushing might be upside down but not the case. ANY SUGGESTIONS ??????

Are your bushings Redding...if so they can be anything...no matter what marked...the wilson are always right....good luck and keep measureing ....we all struggle to get it just rite...Roger
