seating 80 gr SMK's

Shooting a Tikka T3x varmint model in 223 cal.
Do the 80 gr SMK's like to be seated close to the lands or jumped ?

80 SMKs are fairly tolerant of different distances from the lands. But 0.010" to 0.020" from the lands are where I like to start. They do well jammed in a bit too, but that can make a mess occasionally when a bullet stays in there when unchambering a loaded round. So my preference is to be close but not jammed to have more powder room without jamming them.

I loaded five rounds at 0.020 off the lands with 24.6 of Varget and have plenty of room for powder. I haven't had a chance to shoot them yet.

A 223 chamber is not ideal for these but they are very jump tolerant. I usually run mine .025 off, but tested some that probably were .1 off ( loaded for a 223 chamber vs my Wylde), shot the same!

I’ve found the 80’s to shoot well from .010 to .040 off the lands. This has held true in both Wylde and CLE chambers in my rifles. The bullet tends to be pretty forgiving and shoots well with nearly any moderate charge of Varget, N140 or 540, 8208, or RE-15 behind it.

I agree that jumping should not be a problem with SMK’s . 1-8 should be pefect , spins enough but not more then needed .
