Seated to far out?

They state there will be a sweet spot somewhere between into the lands and as far out as .150" .

Paddyd, don't you find that humorous? Did it really take a ballistician to figure that out?? Op is out shooting right now and we are all sitting on the Internet. He's shooting a Sierra varmint not a vld. Although, as far as seating depth is concerned I believe that statement holds true for any bullet... There will be a sweetspot in that range somewhere...I promise. :D

Yea I know, but somehow a bunch got on the VLD jamming subject. I was pointing out to them there is no set way, jammed or off. It's what works that is used.

Was that a VDL that just went over my head? Range report: At 200 yards. Wind 5 to 10 from 6oclock. Four 3 shot groups. On the lands grp #1 .81moa, grp#2 .87moa, grp#3 .94moa. .002 off, grp#1,2&3 no change. .004 off, grp#1 .62moa, grp#2 the truth shot 1 extra cause I choked 1 way out. So group #2 .75moa, grp#3 .56 moa. .006 off, grp#1 .56moa, grp#2 .44moa, grp#3 .50moa. I think not bad for a fat old man with bad eyes. Valentine's callin so that's it for today. Still have 28 rounds loaded. Think I'll shoot super early tomorrow before Valentine wakes up. I love shootin. Ps 44.4 grn of h414 w/mag primer to hot for lands.

Load them to factory 2.635 or 2.650 for 85gr and adjust your powder. We run 44gr 2209 with the 85gr for outstanding accuracy and kill power. Great fan of Sierra now especially the 65gr in 223. Man that kills lotsa deer.

243, sierra 80 sbt. If I seat to the lands only 1/3 of the bearing surface of the bullet in in the case neck.

Seat diameter of bullet .243 (or close to it) in neck and you might be surprised how well they shoot. They don't have to be out nearly that far to shoot well.

2 rules I reload by. First, during the firing of a cartridge, make sure the projectile has contacted the lands/groves of the barrel before it has completely exited the brass case. If the projectile is "floating" between the brass and lands, results will not be good. Second, in a hunting rifle, or any rifle I might have to unload or extract a loaded round from, I try to find a "jump" load so that I don't inadvertently dump powder into my action while removing a loaded round.

Full diameter of the 80 gr bullet shank at the neck shoulder junction works. Jump dont matter.

I have a 7mm SuperMag. The neck is 1/10" long. It is a single shot, so my concerns are around: Is there enough neck tension to hold the bullet in the case? Do I have enough bullet length so bullet is entering rifling before fully exiting the case mouth? Is my bullet seated straight in the case? Another worry was packaging to the range. Most of my ammo is contained in MTM or similar ammo boxes. I have very light foam in the lid to keep loads from rattling too much and to keep spent brass from running amok. If any variable above is off, you find powder in your ammo box. Not fun cleaning up.

It is not so much about how much of the bullet is in the neck of the case. It is more about some of the other questions regarding neck tension, seated straight, engaging rifling before exiting case, etc.....OAL in the reloading book is another part of the "guide". You have to measure your own gun and reloads to make them match.

Another range report. I'll keep it short. .012 off the lands now and got a bunch of 1/2 moa groups. I'm on a mission now and will keep going back .002 at a time. I'll report back if I get a significant change. Good times. Mike

Another, nother, range report. So I got to .022 off lands and its holding at .45 moa. Saw a few smaller but never over 1/2 moa. Beyond .022 it's started getting worse. Now that I have this load I'll start looking for some other way of wearing my barrel out. mike

Ok, so I got called out on those group sizes by my shooting buddy. He remeasured the hole pile. I way WRONG! .56 average. Happy now Tom? Your a fat old gray cloud hanging over my head. Raining on my parade.

This is .050 from lands and shot very well considering the bullet
