Was out on Monday pursuing the saber tooth ground hogs. The day started great, nailed a crawler at 171 yards within 15 minutes of setting up on a tree line.
After an hour of seeing nothing, I moved to another area and about 30 minutes later one came rolling out at 250 yards, stood up, and I nailed him. Feeling real good at this point - "Daniel Boone like". ;D. Twenty minutes later another one rolled out at 259 yards, a crawler - not an easy shot for me and I nailed him. Wow - I'm really hot today. Maybe I should go get fitted for a coon skin hat!
After the tree line went cold I moved back to the first field where I had started. It's now getting late, about 7:45 PM. Off to my right, in the hay field, I saw one emerge from his hole and stand up. It was at a hole I didn't know existed. The shot was a classic, standing full profile. Ranged the distance, 194 yards. Easy shot, even off my shooting sticks given the profile. Aimed at the shoulder and fired. The hog disappeared, shot felt good. Figured I had nailed number 4 on the day. HOWEVER - about 10 minutes later another hog appeared, or so I thought, at the same hole. I just couldn't believed I missed the first time. So I lined up and shot again, the hog disappeared again. Figured I had nailed number 5.
Now getting dark so I went down to retrieve the two hogs at the hole. Guess what, no hogs, no blood - I missed twice!!!
It was the easiest shot of the day and I missed twice! :'( Man did that stick in my crawl all the way home. Went out the next day to check the rifle / scope, right on - perfect. I guess I'm not a Daniel Boone after all. Boy that was hard to take missing that shot twice. But as Forrest Gump says, s*** happens!
