Screw broke off in older Remington receiver

I was taking off the bases on a VLS varmint 223 to put a Near picattiny rail on it. As usual with my luck 1 of the screws just twisted off and the rest is in the receiver. Rail has the standard screws. So when I send this barreled action out to have everything cerecoated will they be able to tap it out to standard so I can use the rail or will they have to be 8/40 holes drilled?

Hopefully they will be able to get the screw out.

Doesn't happen every time. Some of us are pretty good at broken and stuck screw removal. Even so not every operation goes as planned.

If you have trouble with it, make sure to go to go to 8-40. The rail may be bored oversized for the screw heads and will only need to be drilled bigger for the screw shank. I drilled and tapped a Remington target 22 for a scope and used a number drill that the internet stated was the right size for the #6 screws and it was too big and I had to go to #8s. The EGW rail I was using was already big enough for the #8 screw heads just not the shank of the #8 screw through the base.

Just a FYI, if by chance you have to correct your zero by adjusting the windage of your scope excessively one way right or left it would be advisable to have your action scope mounting holes rebored to #8 screws to correct alignment to the bore.

I had a Remington long action that was off by 20+ minutes, had GA Precision rebore to #8's and was dead on after that.

I usually use a tiny end mill and mill it out if possible but what's wrong with all the holes being 8-40. I have done it to a few because someone with less than stellar talent made a mess of each hole.

I have had luck with heat followed by a smack with a tiny chisel like an impact driver. If it's anything other than the front screw you can go either direction.
