Scope ring torque

I have a Leopold scope mount for an ar that calls for 28" pounds for the ring screws. I am using a vortex scope and it calls for 18" pounds. Which torque setting do I use?

I’d use 18” lbs, and clear nail polish on screw threads as a locker. Nothing worse than a crushed or damaged scope tube. An AR may be more demanding in this regard.

I have the same situation on a Rem 700 5R in .308.

Using Leupold Mk 4 rings and Vortex Viper PST Gen II.

I talked to Leupold and I talked to Vortex, got kind of wishy washy guidance, and then I went with 18 in/lbs and haven't had any problems for now over a year.

just make sure your torque wrench isn’t set to 18 “ft lbs” ;)

I torque 6-40 and 6-48 screw rings to 20 inch pounds regardless, especially if they are not lapped and bedded

Yeah i don't think you could get to 18 ft/lbs before those small screws would break or strip out the threads in the rings, but i'm sure many people have made that mistake before.
