Scope Ring Marks

Don't know if they still do it but Leupold used to supply some sort of tape to line their rings. The Burris insert rings do away with lapping, alignment issues, base holes off center problems and usually allow you to get very close to mechanical center. Aside all that, I would never purchase a scope that had rings attached. I've seen some that looked like a pipe wrench was used to level the reticle.

I assume this gentleman still uses them and that's good enough an endorsement for this shooter. YMMV

If you arenot using Burris inserted rings, do this:
1.Align your rings w/an alignment bar, to make the scope application stress free.
2. Liberally coat the inside of the rings w/elmers or any rubber cement.
3. Install the scope as usual. I know it looks like a real mess.
4. DONOT attempt to remove the glue that squeezed out, until its dried. It should be excessive.
5 With your fingers, peel of the glue thats showing. For the glue thats between the scope and action, take a small towell, run it under the scope, and work it back and forth like shinning your shoe, the glue will peel right out.
6 You should now have a scope w/no marks when you remove it.
BTW when you take the scope off, there will be lots of glue on the tube. Not to worry, it peels right off. Larry in western Ky.

I just tried this yesterday for the first time. I was hesitant and second guessed myself when I had glue running down my scope tube and BAT single piece rings, but it worked just as you said. Another nice surprise was how the wet glue worked as a lubricant allowing me to easily rotate the scope that last little bit that they sometimes require once you have the top ring halves in place.

I’m not going to remove the scope to check for ring marks, but based on how the job went, I seriously doubt there will be any sign of marks on this scope when I remove it down the road.

Great tip @LarryDScott . It was slicker than owl poop on a door knob. Thank you much.

Gents
I do not Lapp my scope rings
I do not over torque my scope rings
I do not add glue or tape
I do however buy good rings that fit well
I have purchased rings that went straight to the trash can
I have ruined scopes by over torquing
Geez I'm starting to sound like Guffy!!!

It is probably worth a mention that , usually, there are two types of marks. The first are actual dents because some guys rif on a ring screw like they’re working on an engine head bolt, and those....you’re screwed, however often, especially with BR type rings, you get an alumunum wash of sorts and can be easily removed with something like pal oil or other deep penetrating oil on a patch FWIW.
