Scope Recommendation for Deer Hunting

It's hard to beat a good 4X fixed-power scope, or as jr600yd suggested a 1-4X variable, for the distance you state. Lots of good choices. If hunting in brush, you don't really want anything more powerful. You will want good light gathering ability and a reticle that is easily seen for ease of aim. I would stick with no larger than a 44mm objective for ease of mounting on your rifle without pulling your head out of position. Luckily there are a lot of really good scopes out there that fit your budget.

2-7... Small. Good for seeing close if 7X might be needed. Same for sighting in.

Having said that, on my 44 mag lever Marlin I have a 1.5-5. Multiple 2-7's on my 30-30's. Most of my hunting scopes are Burris. Vortex and Leupold come in 2nd with Leupold being way too expensive for what you want. Burris scopes are excellent and their 2-7 models will fit your interest.

If that Sig Buckmaster is the continuation of the same name Nikon product, you won't be disappointed at that price. I have the Nikon version and it is some darn good glass for that price. I tried lots of the other brands in that price range that were being hyped at the time, and the Nikon was still the best. Vortex, Hawke, Bushnell. There was always something that wasnt quite up to snuff on those. Never a complaint with Nikon.

CVA Scout in 44 magnum for deer hunting ... range 150 yards ...

Though discontinued now, check out the Leupold FX-II 2.5x28mm Scout scope. Works very well at .44mag distances for deer. Can find them for sub-$200.

The Leupold VX-Freedom 2-7x33mm might be an option. Also can be found for sub-$200. (There's inventory at MidwayUSA right now, by the way, for this particular scope.)

I hunt with a chopped down CVA Hunter in 35 Rem. It has a Leupold VX-1 2-7x shotgun/ML, not fancy but works fine for short range swamp hunting.

Thanks for all the great recommendations! I to am a big fan of the now discontinued Leupold 2x7 shotgun/ML heavy duplex scope. I have one on my Ithaca Deerslayer 12 gauge and my Knight 54 caliber Predator. They have worked great for 20+ years and helped harvest many deer. May place a WTB ad here to see if anyone has one for sale.

Thanks again!!

I ride 1 1/2 miles of fence 3 times a week. I carry 16" ARs on my cart in the rack. The ARs have a 2-7s on them. The 2-7 setup works real well for the short ranges you mostly have in rolling hills with woods. I found in mechanical running deer competitions that a 2x works better than a 1x, higher and more consistent scores. Near the same field of view but a clearer image.

I just ran across an ad for Sightron scopes, one is an S1 3x9x40 and a S1 1.75x5x32. Sounds like these are a new design, anyone have experience with either of the scopes? Being a veteran I’m eligible for their military discount program.

Thanks

If you are going to shoot off hand without any support, a 2x Leupold would be ideal. You don't need a high magnification scope for deer hunting which will only magnify your arc of movement and cause you to jerk the trigger.
