scope picture with free recoil

I am new to bench rest shooting and am trying to shoot free recoil.

My problem is that when I get a good sight picture through the scope, I will get a scope to the face if I try to free recoil the shot.

Any tips on how this is done?

I stop it with my shoulder after 1/2” of travel. It’s out of the barrel by then. It’s a fine line but you get reminded if you cross it. Keep the scope as far forward as you can get a clear view.

You could also increase the tension on the front rest to slow down the recoil speed. Adding a brake, if allowed, would also be useful to reduce the shot reaction.

Free recoiling is somewhat of an acquired skill. I'm not good at it!!

It's also difficult imo with larger caliber.

One more thing that PPC. really kicked and you had black and blue marks on your shoulder. they aren't the peep you think they if you load them and it would shoot the lights out with the old 8208..... jim

Which is another contributor. The weight of the rifle.

The little PPC loaded up to top end in a 10.5 LG. can get brutal if you don't your part..... In the old days they liked them to slick on the bags, big mistake then and now....lol...jim

ballonpilot,

A loose/baggy shirt will help you get your shoulder close to, but not touching the stock of your rifle. You will feel the loose shirt, where the cloth bunches up around your armpit, make contact with the gun but not your actual shoulder. This will generally get you that 1/4 to 1/2 inch of clearance you want for free recoil. Any more space is unnecessary. Then just make sure you face is further from the scope than your shoulder is from the stock :)

Some stubble or beard hair will let you do the same thing for getting your head behind the rifle without actually touching your cheek.

Once you do it a few hundred times it will become rote.

I am aware that a lot of BR shooters don't wear eye pro. I would suggest wearing it at least until you are comfortable with free recoil.

Good Luck

IMO a lot of fellows think that they can successfully shoot free recoil with rifles that are not stocked or balanced properly to be shot that way, with caliber to weight ratios that are not suitable, off of rests that are not, with triggers that are not...yet they persist, because no one has told them that you can shoot your way into the short range group Benchrest Hall of Fame shouldering, holding and cheeking your rifle. Tell us about your rifle and rest setup. The other issue that comes into play is bench quality. There is one range in our area that has the most wobbly wooden benches that you can imagine. In order to shoot decently from them, no matter what your rifle, caliber and rest, you have to put both feet flat on the ground, hold the rifle and hold the whole thing, rifle, rest and bench still as you break the shot. Even so, comparing how my 6PPC shoots off of those benches, to concrete benches, I decided to bring my four leg portable bench to that range, because it is a lot better.

Getting to your original question, move your scope forward. You do not need the entire field of view to shoot from the bench at a target. I set mine up so that if I lean into it from my normal shooting position I can just get to a full field view, but in my normal shooting position I only see the center , with black around it, which is plenty to aim at a target.

OK,
Thanks for all the replies.
I was deffinatly letting it recoil more than the 1/2 in. or so suggested.

For those requesting more info.
I am shooting 6.5x47.
anywhere from 120 to 136 gr.
Lenard stock
Sightron SIII
weight of set up is 16lbs.
Front rest is a bald eagle heavy base with a shadetree top with slick 3" bag
back is a gator with slick ears.
both bags are filled with heavy sand.

Some probably can do it successfully with a 16# 6.5x47, but I cannot. I can get pretty close with a 4” wheeler LRB but there’s always a turd in the shot string somewhere. I say put some shoulder in it and save the free recoil stuff for when u get a 6MM or .22 cal. Or add 5-6#

I had a friend over the other day was trying out a 9lb 338 Improved pushing 300gr OTM's near 3000fps....... he held looser

and looser

and loooser

and g'ONKK!!! came into the loading room with his eyebrow dripping red down his face, nose all swoll sidewards......

Yupp, you can free-recoil just about everything but when you got a system designed to drop 2000ftlb on target at 1200yds it can get dicey eh :D
