scope out of adjustment .. help

Purchased a savage 12 bvss in 223 which shoots great but I've run out of vertical le adjustment on my leupold vx-iii 6.5-20x50. And it's still 9 unchanged low. What's the best way to get te vertical close to center while keeping the adjustments as close to center. Thanks. Nick

Nick,
I am having a little difficulty deciphering your post, if your running out of vertical due to long range buy a 20MOA base for it, I have the same scope on basically the same rifle and have no trouble making it to 1000 yards, but if you want it closer to center optically you may have to go with a 30 or 40 moa base but remember it won't be optically centered when shooting close range then.

Sorry. typed that from my cell. Should have said that with my scope at max verticle adjustment im still 9 inches low at 100 yards.... Im using the 2 piece leupold mounts with the front pivot. Ive never run into the verticle being out so much. especially low at such a short distance. Wind did blow the scope right off the bench onto concrete before i had a chance to mount it. Could this have thrown it off? No visual damage and once i found out where it was hitting i was able to put round after round through .5-.75 till i was out of ammo so it holds a good zero.

Either the scope got screwed up when it hit, or something else is seriously out of wack. I would start with trying a different scope and elimiate that variable first.

usually with a 20moa base you dont have enuff "down"at 100yds....as others hav said ....prolly a messed up scope...Roger

Leopold mounts have the horizontal adjustment on the rear. If yours is on the front you have the mounts wrong. ED K

Nick,
When you say front pivot are you referring to the dove tail front base and ring and rear windage base (with side screw) which of course goes to the rear of the action (closest to your eye) and are your rings a matching set? not talking down to you just trying to understand and help.

yea. i have the adjustable one on the rear. horizontal is fine. vertical is the only issue
Okay good, I see just before I posted last that Ed was thinking the same as I was but thats not the case. Possibility they sent you a low and a med ring or miss matched anyway. Measure your rings from the saddle your scope sits in to where it sits on the base on both of them and see if there the same.

I have had mismatched bases also. Brand new unopened package. It can be a real pain sometimes to get it figured out. Good luck ED

Okay is your barreled action securely seated or bottomed out in your stock, bolts tight etc.

Owwch! :o That would prey on my mind and I would send it in to an authorized Leupold center to have it checked off as undamaged. They may even do it sans charge as a gesture of goodwill. At the very least I would do a box test the next time out at the range. Failing that, I'm a big fan of Burris Signature Zee rings if you can find 'em.

From what happened with the scope, bench to concrete, that's the first thing I'd be looking at.

If by some miracle it's not the problem, and your base mounts are correct, I'd use the Burris Signature rings with the off-set inserts to lower the objective end & raise the eyepiece height.

I'd send it to Leupold and have them go through it.. They will do it no charge.. I have sent a few scopes to them that were suspect.. Never charged anything.. I usually drop them an email first..

I actually have the same scope as you, with AO, and am thinking of sending it in as the AO ring seems loose..

I've had to go to Burris z rings on one of my Savages..they work great..you would need to change bases & rings...If it were my scope that took a big hit..I'd send it back to have it checked..It's not uncommon to have to use z rings or shims under the bases on Savage receivers due to their heat treating. if you are going to shoot long distance ..then a 20 min of angle base would be what you want

I've had similar problems w/Savages. The worst was a .223 VLP which had a curved bore in the barrel, it was off by more than 30MOA. Savage replaced the barrel and it was much better. Another one was off by about 15MOA, which was cured by the installation of a quality recoil lug. Savage certainly doesn't turn out the highest quality machine work. I'm of the opinion that if a rifle does not shoot "straight" with a known good, optically centered scope, then you need to go looking for the root cause of the problem rather than band-aid it with tapered bases and zee rings and stuff like that. Within reason of course.
