Scope Levels

I'm lookin into purchasing a scope level. Is it better to have a scope level that attaches to the rail, or one that attaches to the scope? Or is there a difference?

Thanks!

Adam

I prefer on the scope leveled at range to a line drawn with a level. I then rotate the scope in the rings to match another level on the rifle and then sight in again. For me the one on the rifle is just for setup that I take off but the scope level stays on.

I use this one which is easily adjustable in the open and closed position to match the final set of the scope.

Thanks for the info, guys. Is the scope mounted level easier to see while looking through the scope?

What about the rings with a built in level?

Depends on the individual, the distances shooting and quality of the action. For me, no on both questions.

Like mshelton posted, would not trust the holes in any factory action to be precision.

I use the scope attached kind, with custom actions you're probably fine with rail attached or one built into the rings but I've seen quite a few Remmingtons with the scope mount holes off center to trust it, better to have one on the scope and have it all leveled referencing the bolt raceway.

You really want the level on the scope. Don't trust the rail mounted ones as they are not adjustable and the problem with the ones on the mount like the SPUHR is the level is not in a location and distance you can see with your left eye when sighting through the scope with your right eye. If you are older this gets worse as you cannot focus as close as the young guys. What you want is something that you can see and focus on and that usually means as far forward as possible and in an un-obstructed location.

I run an AI AT with a BEAST, and I chose to use the Vortex because it fits the above conditions, more robust than most and pretty snag-free.

The guys with the Accuracy 1st levels, are you using 30 or 34mm scopes? I have a 30mm and can't see spending almost $100 if I have to use a plastic spacer for it to fit on my scope.

Mine is on a 2014 Nightforce Competition with a 30mm tube. The only time you notice the spacer is when you put it on.

The above picture shows the reason a scope mounted level works better than a rail or top scope ring style.
