scope clearance??

I mounted up my new one piece tally rings on my Lawton action. My scope only clears by about 2 business card widths. Is this ok, or will my barrel flex that much when fired and hit the scope? The scope clears the barrel but not by much. Any advise? Thanks Lee

Hi Lee,

A few considerations. What taper is your barrel? A ultra-light taper barrel will flex way more and way closer to the action than a straight tube no-taper barrel. How long is your scope? How close are your mounts to one another? If a scope is fairly longish, it will flex upon recoil. If your mounts are close together, then the forward portion of your scope is unsupported and will flex upon recoil. If they are somewhat separated, then flex may be reduced.
For me, two business cards spacing is on the lean side. The scope is what permits you to place the shot accurately. If it is damaged by recoil, you lose this capability. Just my two-cents(CDN) worth,

Phil

Lee-- No way will the barrel hit the scope the way it's set up.
Worry about other things than that 'O)

I just wasnt sure. I saw a slow motion video of a rifle barrel being shot, and that thing looked like a wet noodle. I never knew a barrel could move so much. Why do you always see benchrest rigs with there scope so high? Only thing i can think of, is so that there head or cheek doesnt touch the stock? I am just glad i made weight with my 30BR. I was 2.7oz over weight with my stainless Lawton picatinny rail and rings. I am now 4oz under weight with the talley one piece rings. Thanks Guys!! Lee
