Scope base , 20 MOA or not

I'm setting up my Savage switch bbl and am wondering weather to get a 20 MOA base or use a 2 piece mounting system ? Max distance will be 600 yds. Mainly 220 yds.
Barrels are in 223, 308, and 30/221

Thank you

Wayne

If your scope has 40+ MOA of travel, you'll have plenty to get you to 600, assuming, when zeroed at 100 that your scope is in the middle of it's travel, 20MOA up from the bottom. Less would be better but that is how it's worked for me the last few times.

I have a EGW 1pc 20moa & low rings on my .223 varmint rig and my scope sits at the bottom of its elevation being just 2 slash marks up, so now I have miles of up dial to go since I like to drop rounds at 1000 yds on p-dogs now & then some for fun shooting.
600 yds you will be fine with standard mount, since overall thats not that far at all.

Howdy !

Whether your scope has a 30mm or 1" tube, also plays a role'....
Some 1" scopes may not provide the desired amount of elevation adjust @ distance.
That is a core driver, on whether or not something like a 20moa base is needed.

The flatter shooting your cartridge/rifle combo; the less likely you'll actually have to have a tapered scope base.

Your 30/221FB will need all you can give it, depending on particular bullet/load for 600

for me the more up the better.......... i always have fun mortering in rounds once in awhile.... sometimes you have to swing your arms..... i'v shot at coyotes 700 yards with them on the run.. ;D ;D at that distance shot placement is a wing and a prayer.... 8) and sometimes you have to just limber up old betsy.....

You never know, when 1 day you may take the .223 or .308 to 1000 yards. Here is the but, if 600 will be max then a flat base will be all you need. Oh, they do make less then 20's.

I faced a similar issue scoping my Spacegun when choosing which Nightforce to buy (BR vs NXS).

Something I noted was; if you're using high rings your 100yd zero will probably be at the bottom of the scope's elevation, giving you more possible "up" adjustment, eliminating the need for the canted mount.

Conversely, a scope mounted closer to the bore centerline will put your 100yd zero more in the middle of the elevation range, limiting your possible "up" adjustment, possibly necessitating a 10-20 moa base.

Like a lot of things, better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Good luck.

Burris Sig. Zee rings(W/Inserts)(my 1st choice) would give you more options than a plain 20 Moa base.

Thanks all for your help, yesterdays testing with a simular round to the 300/221, I was testing 200 gn. cast bullets at 100 yds. then with a few rounds left I thought I'ld see if 2 different designs hit near the same spot, they "were close" at 220 Yds, it took 80 1/4 moa to go from a 100 yd zero to "getting close" to items on the back stop at 220 yds.
Again, Thanks all

A 30 mm tube with a 20 MOA base is a pain to shoot at 200 yds, can't get it low enough. I use Ken Farrell 2 piece bases and change to the regular front base when shooting at closer ranges. Costs more to have 2 sets of bases but it's worth it to me. Rear base it Loctited but not the front. A 30 mm scope will handle 600 yds but probably not 800 or more yds. Good luck.
