Schutz Bros. Barrels

1st post, anyone know about a barrel maker named Schutz Bros.? I have a 5 groove .284 stainless hunter benchrest barrel that was already chambered, so I never saw the info stamped on the butt of the blank, believe the maker was Schutz Bros. At least 20 years old, appears to be very high quality.

I have a post on LRH also.

Thanks, Tom

Just got an email from 357 mag,in Iraq). He knew the Scheutz Bros when they were making barrels in Indiana. Has one of their barrels cut by a man named Red Scherrer. Plus a lot more info. If anyone else wants to know more about these barrels, post on this forum. They haven't been made in years, though.

357,If you check this board, many thanks. Tom

R. G. "Bob"/"Red" Sherer was one sharp cookie.

Complete rifles, actions, barrels, reamers, dies, or tools in general. The man was prolific, and his work excellent.

Many unlimited BR rifles, based mainly upon the Shultz & Larsen M54 action) made by Bob Sherer still remain in East Central Illinois. Rifles built while Bob was with the Ted Holmes Gun Shop in Mattoon.

Bob made barrels, and barrel machines)for several different concerns, including Schutz Bros. in N. Manchester, IN.

HTH; thanks very much for your info. I have high hopes for this barrel. My brother had it put on a Rem M7 several years ago by a 'smith in N.Texas. Shot sub .10's for awhile and then started going away. When we set up to break it out, it nearly fell out. I couldn't find anything else wrong, so I talked him out of it and installed it on a M-700 s/a for my own use. It replaced a Hart that was shooting .130's in a HS Precision stock with one of my crappier bedding jobs. It was so bad I called the rifle Ugly Baby.,I bet rednecks aren't the only people that name their rifles). I am waiting for cooler weather to shoot it, but I expect it to be a dandy. If I ever learn to post pictures, I'll put one up. I re-stocked it in an Accurate Innovations ghost laminate and it ain't ugly no more!

Thanks again, Tom

Best of luck, Tom.

I have a Sherer, heavy) that was planted on a 788 Rem in 6mm Rem. This barrel was replaced with a barrel of faster twist and has few rounds. When ambition strikes, I'll rechamber it and have it on something other than a 788.

The last time I did that was in building a 6PPC bench rifle. That barrel had been planted on a OM-70 in .243, but entered a new life as a hummer BR barrel. That rifle is now gone, but it still produces tiny ones.

All the best.
