SB Heavy 10 Update

GSPV

A failure to plan is a plan for failure.
Hi Guys,

Thought that Od give you an update. The machine is in excellent condition. It has a ton of tooling with it, but I don't know how much of it will be applicable to what I need. Buttload of collets. There is a 4 jaw independent, so good there. Some kind of quick change tool post. Not an Aloris. Some spare parts. A tool to put put the belt together. It's currently set up for 3-phase.

There a a bunch of Brown and Sharp and Starrett measuring instruments that I'll end up selling.

After some thinking, he accepted my first offer of $3,000 for the whole shebang. Just guessing, but I think that I'll end up with $1,500 in it.

So, I'm going to be figuring out how to get it into my shop, then give it some TLC...main,y just cleaning it up.

sounds like you did good- you might want to put a vfd on it -phase converter and speed control

First, getting it home and into my shop is going to be a learning process. I'll have to take it down into parts that are more manageable.

Thought about a VFD. Will look into it. I know that it's not period and not need, but wondered about a DRO.

The three jaw might be too small in the bore. Might have to clean it up, sell it, and get one that matches the bore. As I was out on the riding mower, I realized that I verified that there was a 4 jaw, but didn't check its bore. Might be a similar drill there.

It is in such great shape that it begs to be more restored than just cleaned up and used. We'll see what happens.

I need a couple of bore guides. Thought I might start out learning by making them out of delrin.

I'd start looking for an Aloris or clone tool holder. You will hate that 4 way, especially if you have a hodgepodge of tooling. Every tool has to be the same height/thickness or you have to shim it to the proper height. If too tall you have to mill it off or throw it in the unusable box you probably got with the lathe. Welcome to the money pit club.:D

Do you have to put it in the basement or take it out of one.

It is currently in the seller’s garage. I need to put it in my shop which is in my walk-out basement. I can’t get an engine hoist in there.

I figured there was a reason everyone has an Aloris-type. Guess that’s why.

I use a Johnson bar, wood blocks and Dolly’s- amazing what one guy can move with them. I’ve also got a couple cheap auto floor jacks I use a lot moving equipment. Though if you see my SB in another thread you may wonder about my moving skills:eek:o_O:p:D

Some car wheel dollies will move it. Use a long prybar and stacks of 2x4 wood. Get creative. Its really not as heavy as it looks when you pick up each end but it is heavy as a whole. Its top heavy too

Lissen to Dusty...... the top heavy part is what'll getcha'! We move a lot of vault doors that are heavier and have the same problems, and I've successfully moved 2 lathes and a Bridgeport mill.

Use The Piano Mover's Rule which is NOBODY MOVES!!! Until the guy in charge (you) tells them to.

It's really not much hassle to go down to Harbor Freight and buy 4 swiveling casters. Bolt them to the corners of a WIDE footprint 'H'-frame or heavy sheet of plywood.... strap 'er down 15 ways from Sunday and have at 'er.

You could actually get some of the biggest solid casters harbor freight has and bolt them in where the leveling feet are now then just roll on

Bolt 2 4x4's to the legs...longways......and slide it up onto a trailer then slide it down the stairs.

FWIW, with 4 swiveling casters it will end up like this..........jus'sayin...;)

sure is easy to tip one over—i have experience at it now.:eek:—taking your time at it youll be ok. do you have to go down stairs or just in a skinny door?
oh and the one above has been resurected

Just got an email that harbor freight has those wood furniture moving things for $7. Theyll most likely be trash when youre done but for $14 you cant go wrong.

Huhh?? I've got 4 swiveling casters under my Bridgeport..... and a lathe, and 7 other rollarounds including a mill/drill set up at eyeball ht.....and I leave them on all the time. I can roll my mill away to clean under it.

Mine was on 2x4's with beveled ends. We come a longed it up into a small u haul trailer with ramp. Then used 3/4 pipe under it to roll it in the house. Yes, she let me put it on the sunporch!!:p
