Savage VS Remington

Ok, So besides the Savage I'm considering the Stainless Marlin x7 of New Haven & Black Receivers, Also the later X7 Made in Kentucky? & the 783 Rem Long actions. The purpose is to use Savage Barrels. G states the 783 has the Strongest Action of them All due to the 783 having less unnecessary machining like X7 that weakens the Action. There might be a chance some 783's & X7's have shallower or deeper threads than other compared to the Savages, as I'm told by someone else they won't mount the Savage Barrels.

Judging what's on the Shelf at this very moment, which action is the better bang for the Buck right out of the Box. Who has the Better Barrels until I replace it? If I buy a Rifle, do I get a better trigger for my money with the Rem or the Savage? Also, is there any issues with threading Stainless Barrels into either Action that is not Stainless? My experience has indicated Stainless threads Gaul up pretty easy. Thanks

Dollar for dollar, off the shelf bone stock, the Savage gave me way more then Remington. This was about 8-10 years back, prior to the 783 and the Axis/edge was just entering the market.

Yes, there are a lot of aftermarket parts for the Remington's, most looked down their nose at the Savage rifles. I will admit I did for years. The barrel nut being ugly was the major issue.

I had a problem child Remington that got traded for two savages, lol

It seems anymore that it is a crap shoot if you get a good rifle or not,no matter who made it. Just today I spoke with a fellow that picked up a used savage in 6.5CM. It just would not shoot for him or any one else. It had the barrel cut and threaded for a can, so Savage would do nothing, undearstandable to me. He says the rifling is messed up, not a complete cut. Of coarse I had to get my digs in on the CM, told him it ways such a great cartridge they did not need to full rifle the barrels, he saw no humor in that.

Prior to the 783 has no bearing: this is the Marlin X7 Rifle, now being manufactured by Remington in Kentucky. Apparently Remington has made some Changes, like reducing the CNC movement by half and dropping the Stainless yet still use the same or similar button Rifling. They also have made somewhat of an effort to reduce the chance it competes with it's 700's and offer very few Caliber choices. From what I have learned, this is Marlin's Copy of the Savage. After all Marlin was famous for Mimicking with the MR series, some will argue the Best Rifle ever produced, or was it long & black, the envy of any man, drilled out so it would fit, running like a song....

The OP's question was in regard to Savage and Remington.
Marlin X7 or Remington 783 makes no difference to me. I was pointing out my experience with any Remington vs Savage was prior to any of the others being on the scene, they may have just been coming out I don't recall exactly as I have slept since then.

Stainless to stainless threads are prone to gall. Stainless to carbon steel threads are much more friendly.

For ( out of the box ) I would say Savage , these days either way it's a crap shoot... When you buy be sure and look at a couple of examples and hand pick the one you want , that's what I do with any firearms purchase anymore.... I have just given up on Remington ever since they screwed up the 870... Hopefully they will stop trying to compete in the $350 rifle scene and go back to building rifles like they used to... People will pay for quality... I bought my first Savage awhile back because of remington Q/C and C/S and really like it , it more of a middle to high end one.. My Remington rifles are all made in the 60s and 70s and I like those alot.... Each has its advantages and disadvantages.. personal preference comes into play here... But I can assure you , you can get a crap example of both these days.... It's also not fair to compare a $750 Rifle to a $350 Rifle...

You say people will pay for remington quality if they went back to a $750 rifle but it seems nobody buys those. They go to academy and get the 870 express version of the 700 (the cdl) and complain about the finish. They still make the jeweled bolt actions not blasted with rocks but everybody wants those to be $350 too i guess. Speaking of the 870- They still make the wingmaster- its $800 and the express is $400- guess which one people buy and complain because it feels cheap or junky?

Exactly , I understand why they build the cheaper ones , they kinda have to... But you are totally correct most people don't understand why that wing master cost twice as much... I will pay extra just for the nice wood and finish... I talk to people on gun ranges all the time about the difference between a $300 pistol and even a $500 pistol but people just figure, both go bang. I also have cheap short barrel shotguns that live around my house that are loaded with buckshot for defensive situations... I take them out and shoot the crap out them just for fun , I don't scratch them and I clean them as well as an expensive one... That's just me though I hate it when I scratch something but if you're going to use it , it's going to eventually happen..

Once again you are definitely correct , alot of people won't pay for nice anymore , I used to have an uncle that at the end of the day , back in the day , would just throw his remington 700 deer rifles in the bed of his truck and drive home after hunting... I just can't even imagine doing that with a $100 .22 myself... These days I have the store bring out at least 3 examples of what I want to buy and hand pick one... Alot of people don't even take them out of the box...

Bought a Winchester xpr in 30-06 last year for around 200 bucks with rebate. That was better than it should have been for that kind of money. Nice easily sub moa with multiple different bullets handloaded. The stock was cheap and flexible but that could be remedied.

If it is just to hunt deer with...I look around for better grade used rifles...Winchester, Remington..Sako ...Last one was a 1955 vintage Marlin 336 in 35rem...Love old school cool....Mike in Ct
