Savage VLP Stock?

Hey fellas I have a Savage Mod12 VLP in 243 that I'm working with to start shooting 300yrd benchrest here locally for fun mostly. Just had a question as far as the stock goes. Would I see much improvement in accuracy changing out the factory laminate stock. (The pic below is its current setup). Just not sure were I should put my money at right now as far as add ons goes, obviously load development right now is eating away most my range time an results so far are very promising. I'm going into this just for the experience an fun of it, I know I'm probably not going to be able to hang with the more experienced shooters with their higher end gear but would like to give myself the best chance to do respectable. Just wondering on some thoughts from some of you more seasoned benchresters?.... Thanks fellas!

You can add an accuracy asset from Sinclair's to convert the front of the stock to a 3 inch wide flat surface to ride flat in a 3 inch wide front bag. I would also buy a used hart rest with a solid top so the bag is solid and the whole thing is heavy so it wont move while you are shooting.

Thanks for the info fellas. I may very well try an bed this thing here after the weather breaks. What bedding compound do you guys recommend? Yea I was looking at Heart accuracy asset but didn't know anything about it or how it was used. But may look into getting one. Any advice or info on those? I have a Caldwell rock benchrest right now so Ill probably end up shooting with it for a while but would need to get a wider bag.

The asset bolts to your front swivel which you take out and the screw goes into that hole. They work quite good.

I like JB Weld for bedding. It works great, easy to mix, and you can buy it at Walmart.
Be sure to plug holes with play dough and use a release agent. I like turtle wax.
Be sure to wax the screws and holes in the receiver. Taping the front of the recoil lug with one layer
of masking tape gives enough clearance for easier removal when all is done.

You tape the bottom and sides and some tape the front. The spray release from brownells is expensive but it works better than wax or any release agent I have ever tried.

I have a bedded VLP stock on one of my Savage. I bed with Devcon using Richard Franklin's stress-free pillar bedding procedure found here

Let me know if I can help more.

If you use Acragel, don't try the red box, use the green box. I bought some of the stuff in the red box and found it too runny for vertical applications. I guess, if all you are going to bed is the recoil lug, it would work fine. The green box is like soft butter and stays where it is put.

Thanks guys! I Actually had a Boyds Pro Varmint stock given to me so I may or may not use it (I really like the cheek comb on it). Its a little wider than the factory stock forend but I still think if I use it I will go with the Accuracy Asset in the front. But either of the two would still need bedded. I may just go the JB Weld route. Or my local parts store sells the Titanium epoxy I may use it, its a bit stronger from what Ive seen. I plan on ordering one of the Accuracy Assets this week. An cant wait to place the order for a better scope!!!!

A Savage repeater isn't the first stock that I would want to bed, but it can certainly be done. I don't know how much improvement you will see at the range however. They are already pillar bedded from the factory, albeit maybe not as stoutly as most would prefer.

I would recommend one of the Bald Eagle rests that Shirazz currently is closing out over at bullets.com. They are pretty solid for the coin, and you won't be wanting unless you try a Seb. The accuracy asset to go with it is also a solid recommendation.

YES.

However, to save some money initially, I took mine [before I had custom BR rifles built] and had the butt end cut to the minimum profile allowed by the NBRSA for much improved tracking in the rear bag and added a 3" wide plate to the forend, all done at a nominal cost. A picture, drawing and dimensions are in the NBRSA handbook.

Don't forget to remove the sling swivel screws too.

Additionally, the rear bag is best placed about [one inch] from the end of the butt so the stock can recoil with out running into the palm swell. :)
