Savage triggers?

Asking for a friend.......he has a Savage, not sure if its a 10, 110, but triggers should be the same. He wants something with a light pull weight. He ask me about a Jewel and I told him I didn't think Jewel was still in business. I don't think Triggertech makes a Savage trigger and Jard or Rifle Basix may be his only options. RB has one that goes down to 4 ounces. Is there any other options?

As someone who has been shooting Savages since 1980 I would suggest the factory adjustable (down to 4 ounces) trigger I disagree. I have four of them, some for several years down to 4-6 oz that are crisp and repeatable. And, stay at that adjustment.

Try one before making blanket statements in public.
It's as bad (almost) as saying there are other light truck diesel engines that can compare to the Cummins Turbo RAM!

He has already spent a bunch of money on his rifle. It has a Bartlien barrel in a McMillan stock in 243AI. He has a wide dispersion in velocity (as much as 100FPS) He had a smith look at it and he recommended a new firing pin and a new trigger. (Don't shoot the messenger) The smith dry fired his rifle several times and said it sounded different each time. (Once again...don't shoot the messenger as I'm only repeating what I was told.) And that's why he said to get a new trigger and firing pin.

I'd be looking for a second opinion.

A hard look at the load specifics is where I'd be looking as opposed to a new trigger. Along with the velocity testing gear and dispersion on target.

Another thought - when was the last time you took the bolt apart and cleaned everything well?

JARD

I have 2 Jard triggers, one on a model 10 and the other a 110. If I had another Savage I would buy another Jard.

I don't recall what the pull weigh can be reduced to, but mine are very light. Easy to adjust and do the bump test at the same time.

I have a Rifle Basix that I put on a Savage Axis.
I was building it for short range benchrest. Had barreled action ready. Was hung up on a stock.
I used a different spring from Wolff Gunsprings to get the pull down to 2oz.

For my Savage 110,111 hunting rifles, I've just adjusted the factory spring. Just reducing the pull weight down on the factory spring is a world of difference!

I do have a 111 and a AXIS II with the AccuTrigger. Loweered the factory pull weight on both of them and really like them.
Some people just can't get around the blade on the trigger. I don't mind them.

2 of my Weatherby Mark V's have Trigger Tech's on them. They are fantastic triggers!
I've heard mentioned that Trigger Tech is developing a trigger for Savage rifles.
I really look forward to trying one!

I put a Timney on my daughter's
Mauser without the safety. I put a Dakota 3 position safety on it.
Was pretty simple and straightforward. Very nice trigger.

If your friend is using this as a hunting rifle, I would try to adjust the factory trigger first.
That can get them down to 2 to 2-1/2lbs. Definitely better than the 6+lbs out of the factory.

If they are doing competition.
I'd check with TriggerTech to see if they are out yet or coming soon.
After that.
Timney
Rifle Basix

I don't have any experience with Jard.

I have a Sav trigger made by the Sav gunsmith but he has to put it in..it's 2oz I forgot his name, the gunsmith that makes a sav sing

This is absolutely NOT to shoot the messenger.

If his velocity dispersion is that high, his problem might be in his ammunition. It's easy enough to check whether this variation happens with only one flavor of ammo, or whether it happens across the board.

I've tried multiple times to get him to try different powders. He tries different bullets but stays with the same powder. I have tried Superformance powder in a few of my rifles and have never found it to work for me. I know others have good luck with it but I'm not one of them. I can lead him to water but I can't make him drink. LOL

In my opinion, putting a bunch of money in a Savage is much like doing the same with a 10/22 - when your done spending money, you still have a 10/22 or in this case a Savage. Ask me how I know .

Well then, I'd say the problem is already identified.

If he won't change his methods and expects different results, he can't be helped.

Edit to add - let's have a poll.

Problem to correct is 100fps spread in velocity.

Plan A - Replace the trigger and firing pin spring.

Plan B - Try a different powder as only one has been used.

Start another thread with those options and see what the Forum says.

What makes it worse is he's a tight ass. I know of most of the smiths around here but don't know the one he's using.

I guess the smith was dry firing his rifle and said do you hear that? It doesn't sound the same each time. That's when he suggested a new firing pin spring and trigger. He asked me about triggers and I said I would ask you folks. I don't know why as he probably won't spend the money anyway.

Well, I guess he's stuck with a 100fps velocity spread then.

When he brings it up, switch subjects.
