Savage stock torque??????????

I have a Savage 12 single shot in the laminated stock. What is the current though on stock bolt torque?
I've searched various forums and get anywhere from 25 in lbs to 65 in pounds. Awfully big gap, so what do I do?

I have torqued my 112BVSS,same laminate stock) to 65 inch pounds and find it shoots better than with lesser torque. I know that others will say this is too high as it crushes the wood, but it works for me.

Good shooting fellow Savage Shooter,

I find the pillars vary a lot in BVSS stocks. Most are long enough to bear directly against the action, some are not. If the pillars are touching the action I believe it takes very little torque on the bolts. The action is just a metal tube, if you will, and the more you tighten the bolts, the more stress and torque you put on the action. I say all that to say this: I do not have a torque wrench but on my BVSS and VLP laminated stocks, I only use my fingers on the screwdriver and after the bolts snug up I give it one moderate twist. I can only guess but probably around the 25 ft. lbs. you mentioned. Once the metal of the action is in firm contact with the metal of the pillars, any further tightening is just distorting the action, IMHO.

Danny,

I have a 10FP action in an aftermarket laminated stock with contoured pillars. I torque the screws with a 3" allen wrench. I've found it shoots best with the screws pretty much as tight as I can get them by hand using that tool, with no extension). I first loosen both bolts, then bump the rifle on its butt so the recoil lug seats. Then I go front and back a little bit at a time.

I found the groups improved when I used a dowel to match the contour of the pillars better to the action. This helped the whole action snug down better in the bedding.

I've got the Savage 12BVSS with the laminated stock and found some information, somewhere, that said to torque to 25-35 in lbs. I torque to 35 and there are no problems. A laminated stock will take more torque than a "normal" wood stock but I'm still careful. The rifle started as a .243 and I subsequently rebarreled it to 6BR. Neither of those calibers create high recoil so in my opinion there is no need to crank down on the screws.

Danny - Synthetic stocks generally will take more torque than wood, unless you are bearing right against the pillars. I torque synthetic and tight pillars to about 65 ft. lbs. and wood with no pillars to around 30 - 40 ft. lbs.

45-65 in/lbs

But I do pretty much like Moderator. Always with rifle resting on the butt.
