Savage/stevens Donor Rifle ???

I was looking for a Donor rifle and was wondering if anyone can tell me exactly what to look for and which chambers have the large shanks?

I read the mag's do but does that mean the stevens 300 win mag is a large shank? or is it just the savages that have the large shanks? and lastly if I was going to make a 6br or a 30 br,not sure yet) with a bull barrel would it be better to use a large shank?

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

Eli

a 300 mag uses a small shank. and I would pick up a rifle originally a 22-250, 243, 7mm-08, 308. because it has the right bolt head. and you will see no difference between a large shank and small shank in accuracy. more barrels are readily available for small shank. small shank actions are usually cheaper also.

I have a barrel coming with a large shank, but still looking for an action.. think its worth spending the money to have it recut for a small shank or spend the extra on a large shank action?

Thanks,

Eli

is the barrel finished already or just ordered? is it possible to change your barrel order to small shank. easier to put together with a small shank from a .308 boltface and screw a barrel on. cliffe

I would probably just get it rethreaded to the small shank, you wont loose any barrel length)and just get what ever small action you want.

Buy a WSM or a target action they're all large shank. Some of the RUMs were also.

I don't see a need for the large shank, other than you have a barrel on the way already. I've got a 30" straight cylinder barrel on a small shank action.

Several years back Savage built some large shank 223 s/shots in 24" blue & SS...the 'M' series of which I still have three in use..one still wearing the very accurate 223 factory barrel...the other two have Pac Nor barrels on 'em...

Barrel is finished already has a few rounds through it, got a really good deal on it, and could not pass it up, even if I have to spend a little more on the action was still a good deal i think.

does anyone know if its hard to change the bolt head on the savages? do I have to have a smith do it? I am pretty compitent when it comes to working with things, but am by no means a smith.

Thanks,

Eli

its an easy 10 min swap. if you are left handed I have a large shank action for sale. it use to be a wsm action but with a simple bolt head swap and mag swap,if you wanted a repeater) it would be done.

ah ok thanks, I am not a lefty :, sorry or I would probably take ya up on that.

ok I guess last question would be do ya all think its better to look for a donor rifle and sell off extras and swap bolt head out, or should I like for a used/new target action...

thanks again all for the help

Eli

Really depends on how good of a deal you get on an LRPV or Target action.

The LRPV or Target action is a single shot, 3 screw action and uses a different stock than any other Savage or Stevens.

Have been seeing some used LRPV's and Target actions for sale in the $700 range.
