Savage Precision Target Action

I was looking at different actions for a 6PPC build and ran across the Savage. Has anyone had a rifle built using one of these actions before? I know nothing about Savage rifles as all my rifels are Sako Aseries rifles. Can these handle the pressures that other custom actions see when chambered for 6mm PPC, 6x47 Lapua, 6BR or maybe even the 30BR?

Very safe action design that will handle the pressures some run in these cases very well. The high bolt lift effort may not be a desirable feature for those who do serious bench work. I run two different Savage actions that are custom builds and they work well for my purposes which are long range steel shooting, and informal bench shooting. They are also somewhat limited in trigger selection if you must have a trigger in the 2oz range. Hope this helps.

You may also find that Savage actions do not eject spent Br cartridges as well as custom actions do, I find myself retrieving each out by hand therefore I’m not able to run through a course of fire as quickly as my competitors.
F class might be a better choice due to the delay between shots of record.

If you look on net, there is an improved extractor, ejecter, extractor spring and ball, for $25,that eliminates extraction, ejection problems on the savage i have them in 4 Savages

Anyone who owns a Savage would recommend getting Savage Bolt Lift KIt $35 + shpg, [Lambeth]takes Torque out of firing pin, allows you to adjust depth of firing pin strike,Nate Lambeth and others make them

Great, exactly what I was hoping to hear.
Thank you. And it is nice to hear there are improved aftermarket products to improve it.

Although people have reported limited success,SSS has a kit also but good luck trying to contact Fred &Lisa
I may give it a try

I just built a 6BRAI. I had mine trued up and installed a Bartlein shouldered barrel instead of using the barrel nut. I honestly doubt that any action would show a difference on the target.

IMO the trigger is the weak point on a Savage. I’m just not a big fan of the accu-trigger. The red blade one on the PTA is better than the regular accu-trigger but not that much better.

The bolt lift definitely isn’t anything like that of a custom action but neither is the price. I had @Grimstod from this forum do his version of a bolt lift kit as well as bush the firing pin and fill the ejector hole. Still not in custom territory by any stretch but The bolt runs as smooth as any factory action in my safe. Definitely not clunky IMO.

I can’t speak for ejection since had the ejector hole plugged. I don’t compete and don’t like to fling my brass out to bounce off the bench onto the concrete. It does extract just fine though.

All in all I’m pretty happy with the build although I do wish it had Jewel, B&A, or a Timney trigger.

My Savage has a beautiful safe 6oz Sav-2 trigger with zero take-up and no over travel.

I find the Basix Sav-2 trigger works best with a PTG Bolt Body and a standard sear. I've install at least a 1/2 dozen to date. The cocking ramp angle on the PTG must be slightly slightly different. If you use the standard bolt body or the target sear you just can't go as low on the pull without getting the occasional slam fires.

As far as bolt lift goes, if your rifle is scoped, just learn to put your thumb on top of your scope and then use your fingers to open the bolt. It's fast "enough", requires minimal effort and doesn't disturb the rifle in your rest.

I've been working with the Savage Target actions since they first came out and for the money I don't believe you can do better. I've had the custom actions, but like others on this forum I don't compete formally, and the Target Action is more than capable of taking out prairie dogs at 1,000+ yards and kicking your buddy's butt at the range.

No experience with the PTG bolt body,
I do run a standard sear though with.63 pin protrusion, the cocking pin/ button is set .80 off the bottom of the bolt body, the burr is trimmed slightly then the lift kit with the ball bearing is installed. My guy reduced the top of the bolt body by the thickness of the insert, then leaving the primary extraction ramp untouched.
It seems to work pretty well although I can’t get down to 2 ounce trigger, light yes how light ? I don’t know exactly and really don’t care as long as it doesn’t AD
Sharpshooter said it was a recipe for disaster! When I asked him to clarify he wouldn’t or couldn’t.( I don’t really give a damn what he thinks)

My success or failure is determined by load development and wind calls. (And who shows up that day- ie world record holders or previous national champions etc.)
The Savage will definitely shoot Small just not as fast

I never got into the bolt lift kits. Seems to me that they basically allow you to decrease the firing pin spring tension and might "slightly" decrease the friction between firing pin assembly and the bolt cap/nut.

They reduce firing pin Torque, which can cause Unexplained Fliers, youcan adjust depth of strike also
