Savage Palma in 6BR?

Okay the new Savage Palma rifle looks like a suitable Palma rifle right out of the box.

But what about us Midrange shooters? Any chance Savage will make the Palma rifle in 6mmBR?

Any one know who to call to ask or order one in 6mmBR?

You could always call Savage.
They're "custom" shop will put one together for you.
Its not really a custom shop per say. They simply mix and match
different parts per customer request.
This would be a simple stock switch so hopefully they would'nt beat you up to bad.

The other option is Jim Briggs "Northlander" on Savageshooters.com
I'm sure he could fix you up and probably cheaper also.

Considering the standard 308 model has an MSRP of $1,700+, I would have to strongly consider just building a custom.

Not sure where you got your numbers?
Savage lists the F T/R at an msrp of $1193.
I'm not sure about other manufacturers prices but no one pays that amount unless you buy direct from the factory.
Around $950 is more like it.

It wouldn't be a Palma rifle with a 6mmbr it would then be considered a High Power rifle :)

For that price yeah Start with the action and build up from their.

Definitely build it yourself. Savage Target Action $425 with trigger, trigger guard, recoil lug, and barrel nut,I just bought one for this price). Shillen Select Match Bull Barrel 380.00. Long Range Bench Rest Stock from Sharp Shooter Supply 300.00. Total $1105.00

JCummings,

A proper adjustable stock w/ fore-end rail, thumbwheel adjustable cheekpiece, and 3-way adjustable buttplate costs a bit more - the adjustable hardware alone often costs as much as the stock you ordered.

I agree the gun seems to be at a price point that maybe pushing the envelope a bit - but it is designed to be a more or less turn-key set up - put sights on it and go shoot. Debating what can be cobbled together by the home DIY enthusiast is kind of an apples-to-oranges comparison, and trust me, I'm big on the 'cobble together' bit w/ Savages!). Show me another company making a factory-ready bolt gun that you can do that with in that price range. Remington's 40X costs more and will probably involve a long wait. Other than that...?

Just a few numbers to throw out if you're considering building a LR prone rifle from scratch - the prices for the parts are at dealer discount.
Savage Target Action - $400
Krieger 30" #15 std. Palma bbl. - $290
Fitting & chambering - $150
Custom prone stock w/same features as Savage - $650-$850 Inletting/bedding - $150-$200
$1640 at the low end - $1890 at the top end of these prices - makes Savage's price look a lot more reasonable to me. The biggest difference would be the quality of the barrels & chambering job between the factory rifle & a custom - but if you get a decent bbl. on the factory Savage, you just shoot it until it's gone, then replace with a quality custom job. Still not a bad way for someone just getting into LR or MR prone shooting to get his or her feet wet.

I certainly do not mean to degradate Savage. I'm a big fan and supporter of them. I'm just saying that you can build a very good gun for less and get just what you want. As it stands right now you can not buy the Savage Target rifle chambered in 6BR. You can build one with any chamber you want. As for the stock I see no reason whatsoever for a 3 way adjustable butt if you are not shooting position competition. Set it up for prone or the bench and go shoot. Same for the accessory rail - who needs one for bench or F class shooting? Same can be said for cheek piece. Besides you can order a tactical stock with the adjustable cheekpiece from SSS for $350.00. I know its more work but I enjoy building my own rifles and usually do a better job for less.

JC - I agree that the availability of chambered barrels ready-to-go, and the ease of installing them on a Savage action makes for an attractive combination. Then consider how well most Savages shoot, and as you mentioned, the fact that their Target Action comes with a decent trigger, trigger guard, and an indexed & ground recoil lug - sure makes a strong arguement for the use of one of these actions as the basis for a good target rifle.

I built myself a Dasher in a #18 Krieger on a Target Action about a year ago, then bedded it into a modified B&C #2999 stock and used it in our club's BR Varmint Silhouette matches. It's a dandy rifle, and that stock works real well for the BR VS matches, where we wind up shooting F-class style - prone off rests. My cost on the parts was just under a grand, so by the time I'd added a Leupold LR 6.5-20x40 scope in TPS TSR rings, I had around $1700 in a complete, ready-to-shoot rifle. No question about going that route - you'll wind up with a fine rifle for a very reasonable price. I gotta give Savage a big "attaboy" pat on the back for making these actions available. Same goes for making the choice to market the Palma rifle - even if it is available only in 308. I had well over $2K in a custom Palma rifle built around a Nesika K action back in 2000, so I'm thinking Savage deserves a lot of credit for putting their Palma rifle on the market at that price, especially when we all know that there's not a large number of actual Palma shooters out there. I think such a move speaks volumes on Savage management's support for LR target shooting.

JC,

If a person doesn't want the adj. stock, which is oriented towards conventional Prone shooting ala iron sights and a sling, and has some caliber restrictions for some classes), then get a LRPV, which I believe *is* available in 6mm BR. Two different markets, IMHO.

Just wait 'til you see the groups Terry Brady has shot with the Savage 6BR.

I just have to confirm a few tech details with Terry then I'll run some photos. But Terry's handloads were 0.4" at TWO Hundred yards, and the factory ammo is shooting half-MOA or better.

Oh, interestingly, in this gun, the Norma 203B appears to be more accurate than Varget.

Stop it!

I have a new Savage Target action and now I'll want a 6 BR and my Swede will then curse me again!

You're right and the list price of the LRPV is only $1,167.00.
But the stock is not ideal for benchrest or F class as it has a rounded forend. So you would end up having to resock it. I'm actually planning to buy an LRPV in 22-250 today. Only 750.00 used in as new condition! I have my Target Action. 260 rem. Shilen barrel is ordered and stock is on the way. I already have a Savage low profile varminter with a 6BR Shilen barrel on it. Shoots Great!

I was wrong. The 12LRPV only cost me $725.00 with rings and bases! Barely used. Still had all the paperwork and registration card in box. Now that's my kind of deal on a Savage!
