Savage Model 12 LRPV Needs a New Barrel

Looks like my 2008 rifle's .223 barrel is toast. Looking for a replacement. I don't want to spend more than $500 to my door. Prefer less. The current barrel is 223 @ 26". The LRPV barrel has a large diameter. Over an 1". I want to keep that contour. It will only shoot reloads. I currently reload 55, 69, 77 and 80gr bullets. I don't see the need for anything longer since I have other accurate rifles should I ever get the opportunity to shoot out to 1000yrds. Almost all of my shooting will be at 100, 200 or 300 yrds. I've looked at Northland (Criterion and Shilen) and Urban Rifleman. Probably leaning towards 1/8 twist. Stainless. I will be putting the barrel on myself.
Any recommendations?

Take your pick, there aren't many bad barrels out there, I have PacNor, Shaw, Criterion, Black Hole and X caliber on .378 base cartridges. Do double check the shank.diameter of your barrel, in 2008 large shank Savages weren't very common if they existed at all.

Measure the barrel in front of the nut. If it's 1.120 or more, it is a large shank. If not, it's a small shank.

I have confusing measurements while trying to figure out small vs large shank. The barrel just in front of the nut is 1.110. The barrel nut looks like the 5/8" long. There is no ring around the barrel just ahead of the threads. The picture on the Shaw barrel web sites shows the ring on the large shank. Based on what I can measure it appears be be a large shank. Anyone else have thoughts on how make a definitive determination?

Lrpv rifles were all large shank

That's large shank.

Urban is your best bet Fast delivery compared to others--Great advice--and...ummm best price out there is just a bonus--Honest they shoot as good as most folks can manage
Chambers are well finished--no brainer get one be happy save $$
<My 223 Urban barrel -- for shooting 300 yds as you stated-- is a laser beam

Highly recommend Shilen select match barrels. I have used a number of the Shilen stainless select match large shank barrels to rebarrel my three Savage LRPV rifles. All of them are a bull barrel contour (about 1” at the muzzle for a 26” barrel) and all shoot better than the original Savage barrels. They clean up easier too.
I bought them through Northland. The other good thing with Shilen is if you send them a dummy round with the bullet seated where you want it they will set the throat length (freebore).
In my humble opinion Shilen makes one of the best button rifled barrels out there and at the price for a hand lapped chambered Savage barrel they are a real bargain.

What cartridge are you going to do? Have you considered 222 REM? might not have the oooomph you want... keep us posted on your project.

Update:
My Urban Rifleman barrel showed up today. Stainless, 1/8. Installed it and headed off to the range. Interesting outing.
- After sighting it in I shot 55gr loads for group and they were better then the factory but still sucked. Like 2" suck
- Switched to 68 SMK and shot the next 5 rounds into about 3/8". I've never shot a group that small before. I shot a second 5 round group into about 5/8". Those groups are with abgout 15 rounds down the barrel. Best group I had with the factory barrel was just under an inch.
- 77SMK did not group great for me either. Not as bad as the 55 but noting like the 69gr.
I only had about 30 minutes. I will go back later in the week to spend more time figuring this out. It's now looking like the 55gr issue is mostly related to the bullets. I'm going to pickup a different brand so see if I can do better. Oddly enough my AR15 with a AR Stoner 1/8 barrel shoots the 55gr bullets around an 1 - 1 1/2 inches.
Anyway, love the barrel. It was so easy to install once I had the right tools. Now I thinking about switching over my 308 Model 10 to 6.5CM just to reduce the recoil........ It's only money

I've been happy with the 3 Savages I have. This particular gun was purchased WELL used. Built in 2008.
