Savage Model 12 Benchrest or Model 12 LRPV Left Port?

The caliber is not the issue, the flat bottom BR stock is. Some guys went to the F T/R stock to get in.

So do I need to use a neck sizing die set? Youll have to forgive my ignorance I load for tactical bolt action matches this is my first endeavor into real precision stuff. Ill be honest after buying the rifle and scope I don't have much coin left and have been looking at the Redding sets on Midway. One is a full length sizing set and the other is a neck sizer. Would either one of these do ok to get my feet wet for now?

The Model 12 F Class looks like it would be even better with the flat bottom butt stock but unless the club permits changing the stock contour you'll quickly find that the flat is narrower in the front than the rear so it doesn't ride the rear bag well at all. Under recoil the buttstock isn't touching either of the ears on the bag, just kind'a wandering around.
I thought on the Model 12 F Class the flat bottom butt stock is wider in the front and narrower in the rear. Depending on where you measure it (since it narrows going from front to rear) it is over an inch toward the front and less than an inch at the rear. Depending on your rear bag ear width and where the butt of the stock rides in the ears it can actually tighten up during recoil.

After contacting the club, they said there was no issue with that style of stock, so I think I should be good to go. As far as the dies go, should I go with a neck sizing die or full length? Im looking at the 2 die sets from Redding on midway.

If the Redding 2 Die Set is what you want I would go with the Redding Type S Match Bushing 2 Die Set. It is more expensive than the standard 2 Die Set and you will also have to purchase a Neck Bushing for it. The standard set will get you started but this is a sport in which you find yourself continually upgrading as time goes on.

Thanks for the info! Yea basically Im just looking to start out so the cheaper set what Im going to use probably to start. Once I get some time with it and maybe next year when funds permit Ill step it up to a higher end set. Do I need to use a neck sizing die or full length die? Thanks kinda what Im hung up on, any ideas?

Get the Full Length Die set since you are just starting. If you only use a neck sizing die eventually you will have to get a Body Die or a Full Length die to resize the case.

I can only speak to the one I own and it's about 1/8" wider at the back than in the front. The rifle recoils back and isn't touching either ear when it's done.

I would recommend the neck die set with the bushing neck die, the body die and a seater. With all my serious rifles I bump the shoulder and size the neck in two separate steps. If you add the competition shell holder set you can bump the shoulder back somewhere between just a smidgen and 0.002" depending how far they ran the reamer in and every case will be the exactly the same every time. I know it's not the cheapest way but trust me, it works. Someone will probably say you can do that by just adjusting a full length die but every press I've owned had enough slop in it that consistent shoulder bump just didn't work.

Now that you have ordered the dies inquiring minds want to know which dies you ordered.

I ended up going with the Redding 2-die Set with the full length sizing die. Although I know its no where near the best it will at least get me going till maybe next season when I can step it up a little bit and go with one of the Redding competition sets.

Last night I was helping my neighbor make his initial reloading accessories order. He is not sure how deep into this type of shooting he wants to get so like you he thought the same 2 Die Set was the way to start and I agreed with him. Good luck with your new adventure.

Thanks I appreciate all the advice and help you have given! An yea that's kind of my thing I really am not for sure how deep into this I want to get yet to just mess around at my local club twice a month. If I end up liking it and when funds permit Ill for sure end up getting one of the higher end sets if this set proves to not be as competitive as what Id need.
