Savage Model 12 5mm/35 caliber

If anyone is interested the shop has the gun and a bunch of reloading supplies for an additional $160. I can pass the shops info on. Im not sure what type of condition it is in cuz i havent seen it just got a call from them .

Savage had that chambering available from the custom shop, I know that much for sure. The guys that have the 5/35 really like it. PM me the details if you have time.

I bought a 5mm/35 SMc from the Savage custom shop. Love the caliber. Just got back from the range where I shot it with my new 20 Caliber Rock Creek barrel. My original barrel shot in the 3s and the first groups with the new barrel are also in the 3s. Velocity is 4350 fps with a moly coated Nosler 40 grain BT. The cartrige is described in detail at Superiorballistic.com. My experience with the chambering agrees in every particular with McPherson and Smalley.

I replaced the savage barrel at around 4000 rounds not because it was shot out but because it is rough and is hard to clean. My only complaint is that if I miss it is because the round is so flat shooting that I have shot over.

My shooting buddy has a LRPV in 5/35 SMC, he ordered it from Savage's "sort of" custom shop. It's a neat looking round. He sent the rifle back three times before he got a barrel that would shoot, this one shoots well for about a dozen rounds but goes ape unless it's cleaned. No way will it even approach 4350fps with a 40 grain bullet, all the high speed claims made by the inventor were with light bullets. I own seven 20BR's with barrels from 24" to 32", none of them will approach 4350 fps with a 39 or 40 grain bullet yet they hold more powder than the 5/35. If I remember correctly the 20BR with Lapua brass hold almost 3 grains more water than the 5/35 (I think it uses Norma??), I remember weighing them back in 2008. My friend says he wishes he would have done the 20BR, less money and better brass. We have no way of knowing if the "Weatherby" style shoulder enhances the SMC. I do know the dies were costly, he bought the brass before Russ Haydon started handling his. FWIW, my 20BR barrels start showing fire cracking with a bore scope around 500 rounds while a 204 Ruger will show none a 1000 rounds........ None of my BR barrels have a 1000 rounds (yet) so time will tell

We are leaving for South Dakota tomorrow evening, I have 978 rounds of 20BR and 868 rounds of 204 Ruger, all single stage loaded with 39 grain Blitzkings. My friend shoots mainly 204 Ruger, but will shoot the 5/35 and a couple 223AI's, hope the weather is good, the pups are up........!!

My Savage LRPV 5mm/35 shot well with the original savage factory barrel but looking in the barrel with my Haweye borescope was depressing. The bore was rough rough rough. It shot in the 3's but was miserable to clean. Called Savage and they sent a prepaid fedex pickup order. The new barrel was better but still rougher than I liked. A friend bought a 204 Ruger in a LRPV and the barrel was just as filled with machine marks as mine. As both barrels shot well, we let sleeping dogs (rough barrels) alone and just shot small groups and were happy with accuracy but disappointed with cleaning. Both chamberings of Savage 20 caliber barrels were accurate but hard to clean. On the theory that you can't have everything I put over 4000 rounds down my 5m/35 barrel. The velocity was 4350 fps which I was very pleased with. My savage barrel still shoots in the 3's. Now I did have problems with the Norma 5mm/35 brass sold by Russ Haden. After 3 firings the primers fell out. I formed Lapua brass and have gotten over 12 firings with no problem. I am going to put 300 rounds through this rock creek barrel and then Nitrate it. While that is going on I will put the savage barrel back on and shoot up the rest (600 rounds) of 5mm/35 that were previously loaded and just slighty too long for my new reamer. I like this round but am not sure that it is that much superior to a 204 for most shooters. It has been for me. However, I like the Savage LRPV action( right bolt left port) so much that I bought an action and built a tight necked 222 on it. As I said in a previous post all the claims made by MacPherson and Smalley were confirmed by my experience with the round. The high velocity is a plus but I think that the parabolic sholder may add significant barrel life. Anyway I am more than satisfied with the round and will continue to enjoy it. If I miss it is because I shot over.

I actually Purchased one of By's personal guns. A friend of his was selling them for By's wife after his passing last year. I picked up one of his Savages and all I can say is I truly love the gun/round/performance.

I took it up PD shooting last summer and it seamed to me that I could shoot 3 times as many rounds before the barrel got warm when compared to my .204.

WikiPedia has a good writeup on the cartridge.

For the record I was wrong, savage did indeed make a rifle in 5/35.I shot mine not all that long ago,it shot consistently in the mid ones with several groups in the low low ones.It is the most accurate little rifle I have ever owned built around a sav PTA action.I fired 50 rounds in fairly short order and the rifle barrel wasnt even luke warm.Mine has a pac-nor super match and clean up is a snap. For those nay sayers,By was a rocket engineer and his little round is so different that many couldnt accept he was right about his findings and barrel life. You have to open your mind to new things or life becomes boring. His cartridges are very accurate and keep the barrel much cooler and at the speeds they shoot have remarkable barrel life for such a hot little cartridge.I am glad I bought this rifle and when it quits shooting,I will rebarrel in the same caliber. He made several other cartridges up to 30cal and beyond.Out west there is a fairly good following of people who really like this 5/35 and it wasnt hype,it just wasnt in vogue.

I passed on the rifle in question but can say it did not last that long at the shop. I purchased a Savage LRPV in 204 to satisfy my 20 caliber desire. The gun shoots great with the 39 gr blitz. Next will be the 20 BR ;D
