Savage Model 12 5mm/35 caliber

I have an opportunity to purchase an exclusively built Savage model 12 in 5mm/ 35. Never heard much on this caliber and looking for input. Anyone have any experience with this caliber??? Thank you

Re: Savage Model 12 5x35 caliber

Never heard of the cartridge! Before you buy the rifle, be very sure that you can find loading data for it!

Re: Savage Model 12 5x35 caliber

The 5x35 smc is kinda of like a .20BR with a weatherby type shoulder. Other then that I know nothing about it. :)

Re: Savage Model 12 5x35 caliber

I spoke to a lady at Savage and was told the gun was built in 2007 with a target 3 screw action. She stated that she also never heard of this caliber.

Re: Savage Model 12 5x35 caliber

Mic Mc Pherson and By Smalley designed it. By is a rocket scientist. It is a 20 cal BR with rounded shoulder. Russ Hayden sells ready to use brass for it. I had one and it will out perform any 20 cal. I sold it only because 1000 IBS left no time for prairie dogs.

I am assuming that it was designed as a short range speed demon?

Re: Savage Model 12 5x35 caliber

Mine was great out to 500-600yards. The velocity was over 4000 fps and it was a tack driver, making one hole at 100 yards.

Re: Savage Model 12 5x35 caliber

Just a 20BR with rounded shoulder and lots of bs hype. Same performance or maybe even a bit less than the 20BR.....it's no faster or more accurate. A couple friends have 20BRs and it's a good cartridge, very accurate and fast. Don't even bother with that 5x35 thing.

This is exactly my feelings. The shop just called and wants $800 for the gun and another $200 for the reloading supplies. It is a pre accu trigger model with a target action and a cheap tupperware stock. Not worth the money!!

And that my friend is why we belong to this and other forums, to learn and save ourselves some time and money due to the knowledge and expertise of its members! ;)

I have a pac-nor barreled savage pta with all the reloading supplies, bought it last summer. It plain shoots. You should see who's barrel was on it before you give up on it.

The gun is a stock Savage that was built in 2007 by Savage as a special run for lets just say Cabelas or Dicks Sporting Goods. The woman at Savage couldnt tell me what company ordered these. I havent found much about this caliber on line.

For starters, it was to my knowledge only built on a LRPV platform with a H&S stock. I suppose it could be a custom shop model 12 though. The reloading supplies are Lapua brass, and probably Redding dies. The advantage to me is great brass, "Lapua" and no fireforming, not everyone feels comfortable with that. $800 for a LRPV is not a bad deal. Depending upon how much brass and how many times fired, $200 might be a good deal, have you checked on Lapua 6br brass lately? I agree, it does nothing a 20br won't do, 43-4400 fps with a 40 grain pill, without having to fireform brass.

You dont bother fireforming as russ haydon has the special lapua cases in stock.Keep an open mind, just because you think it sucks doesnt mean the hundreds who have chosen to try something different think it sucks,LOL. This cartridge was never offered by savage, and most certainly was a set back and rechamber.

This gun is a stock outta the box SAVAGE not a custom shop gun nor a rechamber job. It left the factory as a 5mm/35. I called Savage with the serial # and was told it was a special run they did in 2007. The guy who traded it in even has a magazine article there about this exact firearm. It does not have a HS stock on it so the Savage rep tells me. I have the serial # written down at work if anyone is interested in a little research or if interested in purchasing this from the shop.

Yes it is considered a Long Range Percision but from what the Savage rep tells me it does not have the HS stock on it but she can be wrong. It is not a custom shop gun but was a special run they did in 2007.

I would look at the gun, because they were LRPV with the H&S stock. That is the target action. Savage custom shop will chamber any barrel they make in any caliber they have the reamer for. That is why I thought it may be a custom shop gun.
