Savage LRP 6.5 Creedmoor Load

Hello all-

I was wondering what I should start for a load with this? I was pleasantly surprised with how well the factory 120 gr AMAX was shooting. although, it wasn't extremely consistent, I was seeing anywhere from .3-1" three shot groups at 100. I realize that is inconsistent and considering it's only at 100, but for factory ammo I was somewhat happy..

The other day I tried out some 120 grain GMX I had laying around.. and man oh man that was ugly.. I don't know if I shot a group under 1", most probably being 1.5-3".. I'm hoping thats the ammo and not the gun? I am out of Amax's at the moment..

From what I've read, the 140's should shoot considerably better.. Any input on what load I should go for? Also, has anyone had a similar experience with the GMX? It is more of a hunting bullet so I'm hoping thats where the issue is.

Thanks in advance!

Michael

Good Morning,

I don't own a LRP Creedmoor, but I shot one at a Savage Day at our range. Savage provided the rifles and Hornady provided the ammo. We were shooting the factory 140 grain Amax, and after approx. 400 rounds thru the rifle without cleaning it, we were hitting the 3" spotter disk at 600 yards more often than we were missing it. The load that Hornady uses is printed on the cartridge box. I'm sure you can google it and find out what it is too. If it were me, I would use their load as a starter, and then tweak it to your rifles likes.

I've got LRP 6.5 CREEDMORE here in my shop w/factory nosler ammo 140 gr bt it only shot .750 3 shot at 2700 I'm going to do some load development because this will shoot when it gets broke in and I want the my customer happy!

I have the Savage Long Range Precision in 6.5 creedmoor too. Here is the load I used on my first trip out this year to test:
41.5 gr of H4350
Fed 210
Hornady Brass (2x fired)
140 Hornady BTHP, Cant remember the bullet seating depth. I have written down somewhere.

Remember to work your load up from a safe starting point from a manual.

1st three shots in upper left were sighters. Then two five shot groups. (100 yards)

I have a Savage 10 Predator Hunter in 6.5 Creedmoor. It has a 24" barrel vs. the 26" barrel for the LRP. I have a couple loads for it that work well.

All Hornady brass
140 AMAX
42.1 gr H4350
0.025" off the lands
2777 fps, SD = 6
Shot a 0.600" 5 shot group at 100 yds today

142 SMK
41.7 gr H4350
0.040" off the lands
2744 fps, SD = 11

Hunting load
130 Berger Hunting VLD
43.8 gr H4350
0.040" off the lands
2934 fps, SD = 10

I also have a 12lrp in 6.5 creedmoor. Here is a photo of my ladder testing for it.
New Hornady brass, Federal 210 match primer, lapua 139 scenar.
H430 powder .010 off the lands.

I went with the 42.2 load @ 2824fps.

As to the original post, the GMX is a complete failure from Hornady in my book. I have never found anyone that could get them to shoot. I don't know why they are still making that trash. The SST shoots good, but is of poor quality, too. I know a guy that just a couple days ago shot some Hornady Superformance from his Creedmore and the bullet hit the target in three pieces at 50 yards.

It amazes me that Hornady is pushing this crap and you cannot even find their good Interlock bullets. They are what brought them to the dance and they cannot even keep them available.
