Savage long action vs Rem 700 long action

Looking at building a long action long range rifle. The Savage Varmint and Target actions are only available in short action, which leaves the standard Savage long action.

How does this compare to a Rem 700 long action?

Lots of people use machined/blueprinted 700 actions. Is there a simmilar market for the Savage?

Assuming equal quality barrels, triggers, stocks and glass which action has the best bang for the buck accuracy potential?

good question. I've built several on Rem. 700's, using BERGARRA bbls, with excellent results, BUT, I'm going to try a savage on the next one. The SAVAGE F-class team has been doing very well with stock rifles, so there has to be a reason.

Yeah the factory rifles seem to be doing really well. One thing I've noticed though is that they're all short actions. There doesn't seem to be as much market support for the long action builds.

You may want to go to www.savageshooters.com and look around. There has a been a few single shot long actions in the classified section, in the last couple of months.

The Savage long action has a closer action bolt spacing than a Remington short action. The Savage has a floating tang, where the Remington rear action screw is in the rear tang.

There are far more gunsmiths that work on Remington's, and far more quality aftermarket parts for a Remington. What works on a Remington, is different than what works on a Savage. The top Savage gunsmith is Sharp Shooter Supply, they can do magic to a Savage that will compete with custom actions.

If I was to build a long action Savage single shot, I would move the rear pillar forward so that it would have full contact. This would require a custom inletting to the stock, but if you going to have a custom stock why not just do it ? Savage uses a half pillar in the back to clear the sear .

There come up on here in the classifieds once in awhile and keep your eye on GunBroker for one, the best would be the 112 BT Competition Model that was single shot in 300 Win. Mag. I think if you search the classifieds you may find one that was listed by phil357 I think. You can always post Want To Buy on all the other Forums out there.

I would have to say the BEST Savage smith is no other than Larry Racine, one time PALAMA Team member, check out his website http://www.lprgunsmith.com/index.asp now he could build you one!

I have a single shot long action if you are interested.

Also, Savage IS making the long action now....it is on their new rifle chambered in 338 Lapua.
