Savage long action project

Just picked-up a blued left-hand Savage long action with '06 boltface.

No barrel or stock.

What should be built on it ?

Long Action?

6.5-284 or straight .284. That's about as big a cartridge as I like to shoot. The 6.5 might have a slight ballistic and accuracy edge, but the 7mm should give 60% to 100% greater barrel life.

I think you should sell it to me so I can build a more suitable rifle for next years VHA Jamboree,and no, it's not a 219 Donaldson Wasp). Mr Moderator hit the nail on the head for what I want with one of his suggestions, but I won't say which.

.260 Rem is another that benefits from the extra mag length of a long action.

That action now has 150 barrels for it ranging from 14-221 to 470.

And five complete bolt assemblies ranging from 223 family to H&H family (inc. 6PPC and an additional controlled-feed H&H).

No argument with any of the choices above as obviously it depends on what you want to do with it. I ended up having a 30-06 built with mine simply because…….! With very little work and no accuracy improvements and using a HV Benchmark barrel have a consistent 1/2” 200 yard rifle. I hope this isn’t the last of my good fortune.
