Savage job

i have a guy that is bringing me a savage action and a criterion barrel, I have never messed with a savage, will I need a go gauge? Or can I just use a piece of brass? He is ordering the twist he wants but in 223 and I will run a 22 creedmoor reamer in to open.

go/nogo is preferable, but no reason a piece of brass within the go nogo range shouldn't work just fine...the only way I have ever put together Savage prefits.

I have 2 savage rifles that are chambered in 6mmBRX and using a piece of fired brass as a gauge they are within .002 of each other. I just screw the barrel in close, insert brass, close bolt, screw barrel down hand tight and tighten the nut. Done.

Yep that.s right..

I've done a lot of stuff for the first time in my long life, like rebuild engines, build rifles, design and build aircraft, design and build houses, and all sorts of other interesting projects and adventures.

I've found that short cuts are great, but usually they're best left to those with experience. I have no problems with a real gun smith using a cigarette butt to set head space, if that's what works for him.

But I went ahead and bought a go gauge when I built my first Savage rifle. For a no-go, I used the same gauge with a piece of clear packing tape on the head, carefully trimmed.

Do what you feel comfortable doing, but realize that making important settings, especially where there is potential danger if you get it wrong, is often best done the right way, at least on the first go-around.

I remember one talented and very experienced guy say this about a novice who was on the verge of a big mistake. "He doesn't know enough to know what he doesn't know".

I don't see what all the fuss is about. When I fireform BRX brass my headspace is off .100" and nothing happened.

If you're doing your own work, do it any way you want to, you probably won't sue yourself if something goes wrong. But, if you work for others, use the proper and approved industry methods, 'cause if something does go wrong they can/will sue you! Is that blunt enough and to the point reasoning for you guys to understand?!
