ANY Savage Prefit w/Short FreeBore for 6mmBR?

Trying to find a Savage prefit barrel (large shank) in 6mmBR with a freebore of .038" or thereabouts, for shooting 65 and 68 grain Berger bullets. Dave Kiff at PT&G recommended .038". Called Criterion and Shilen. Criterion has one reamer, with .093 freebore. Shilen is .098". Way too long. Left message at Pac-Nor, and am trying others, but hoping do not have to buy custom reamer, barrel blank, gunsmith work, etc. Anyone ever found a short freebore Savage prefit?

Phil

Heck, just jump 'em. I shot Berger 80gr FB from my long-throated 6mmBR in a PacNor three-groove. They shot into itty-bitty groups, well under 1/4-MOA at 100.

I have an original Savage barrel that was a .243 and I had it rechambered to 6mmbr 1-9.25 twist. I can call the smith and ask about the freebore if you are interested? I used 68gr. Bergers.

A couple of thoughts come to mind. At the moment Pac-Nor is building a Savage Pre-Fit for me using a special PT&G reamer designed specifically for the Berger VLD 90gr bullets, just the opposite situation from yours. True, you must buy a reamer for about a hundred and a half, but you need not go through the process of buying a blank, finding a trustworthy gunsmith, etc. In other words, you are buying a semi-custom prefit for the additional cost of a reamer, which you own once Pac Nor uses it. The additional heart burn associated with buying a full custom barrel is minimized. I think Pac Nor isn't the only company offering this service.

Or, you could buy a "short chambered" prefit. It is a barrel ready to go in every way except for final reaming. Then you could borrow or rent (or even buy) a suitable reamer with a short throat and do the final reaming yourself.

Forget the reamer part. Got one to loan him that was made by PTG with a freebore .045 and specifically for Bart 68gr and Berger FB bullets. Shoot lights out in my Savage Model 12BR rifle. He's now working on getting the barrel.

Thank you Alex. We talked, and your help and generosity is much appreciated and a testament to the helping nature of people on this forum.

It looks like Shilen is my best bet for the barre, but not sure yet. They will use a custom reamer and do not charge for doing so (some do). Price, out of a discount house that will facilitate the order of the barrel and coordination of reamer, is very good. This is for Shilen's top "Select Match" barrel. Still, a wait, but less than other makers. I need to check with Pac-Nor and X-Barrels. Not sure how these and Shilen Select Match compare...

Whatever barrel ends up on the gun, hopefully it will do well.

And thank you again Alex.
