Savage headspace question.

So after firing some of my brass 5x (260rem) in my savage i noticed the heads were doming out. I checked the factory bolt head and it was starting to dish out. I ordered a ptg and put it in. My go guage closes with no problem but before with the factory head a 1.632" guage the bolt wouldnt close now with the ptg a 1.632" closes half way and a 1.633" wont even com close to letting the bolt handle move. Am i ok or should i reset the headspace?

I had to turn the shank of the PTG bolt head down a few thou so it would "float". It is not supposed to be a tight fit. Should have some "wiggle"going into the bolt body.

  • Go Gauge: Go Gauges match the minimum chamber dimensions allowable under SAAMI specifications. In order to accept SAAMI maximum ammunition, the rifle must be able to chamber the correct go gauge.
My go guage closes with no problem

I dont know. You would seem to be ok??

Very confusing without comma and periods.

My go gauge closes with no problem. But before , with the factory head , a 1.632" guage , the bolt wouldnt close . Now with the ptg, a 1.632" closes half way and a 1.633" wont even come close, to letting the bolt handle move. Am i ok or should i reset the headspace?

I am not a gunsmith or english teacher. :D

A bit confusing, yes.
However what is the problem with re-setting the head space?
When changing bolt faces there would be no real reason in comparing what another bolt face did to what the new one does which you will be using.

They chamber just fine. Sorry about it being confusing. The original bolt head did not close on a 1.632" guage. The new bolt head will close half way on a 1.632" and will not close at all on a 1.633" guage. I have my tools packed up. I figured it was ok but will have to adjust my die later.
