Savage firing pin spring problem

I have savage model 11 223, I have shot thousands of rounds thru it. So many that the rifling had worn out at chamber. I bought a cheap Adam's Bennet barrel from midway few years ago at a close our price, 89$ I think it shot ok bout not as good as the original shorter barrel even though it was a heavy contour. I have also used the receiver for 7mm08 barrel I bought for deer hunting. I decided to pur the old 223 barrel back on just for a truck or four wheel gun. Problem was the firing pin didn't struk

How are you switching between two different size of case heads? 223 family versus 308 family?

Did you switch back to the 223 bolthead?

Accidentally posted before finishing!! As I was saying firing pin didn't strike primer hard enough to fire. Not sure why maybe spring had got weak from setting in gun cabinet so long. While cleaning the firing pin and bolt I discovered the tension on the spring is adjustable, by simply turning the rear of firing pin assembly clockwise. Thought some of you might like to know this.

Actually I used the bolt out of my model 10 308. I could easily changed bolt face though, have done it from magnum to standard on a another receiver

I would go ahead and put in an order for a new spring and head off this problem before
it ruins your day.

I had an issue like that many years back on 1 of my savage bolts, thought it was my spring, took apart the bolt, nope had a lot of grime built up around the spring and firing pin.
Still ordered a complete firing pin and spring just in case.

I have two Savage rifles and both have required spring replacement after a few thousand rounds. Now I carry a spare firing pin assembly as it is easy to change in the field when it suddenly is an apparent problem.

Are you sure the firing pin sticks out far enough. You can adjust that on a Savage pretty easy. When you take the bolt apart you will see it is adjustable.

The 308 is a different size of bolt face - not sure how this would eject a 223 case.

Are you swapping parts from more than one bolt?

Yes I have but when I have a standard caliber on the 223 receiver I used a bolt from another gun when I set the barrel. Of course I use the standard bolt I set the barrel with to fire it.

Therein lies the problem. There can be differences in bolt bodies and boltheads.

I haven't had problems and besides savage bolts are unique in that that have some movement available in the bolt faces. This means bolts can be interchangeable since the bolt face can move to accommodate some differences in receivers. Perhaps another unintended benefit of savage trying cut cost.

You're swapping the complete bolt and not just the head correct?

Is the bolt clean and adjusted correctly and does it function outside of the rifle? Firing pin protrusion?

Are you sure the headspace was set correctly when you put the barrel on? Extractor was removed or you made sure to hook the gage behind it?

Is the trigger clean and are the safety and over travel screws adjusted so the sear releases completely? Is the stock inlet so there is no interference with the trigger?

There are LONG and SHORT boltheads as well.

If you set the headspace with a long, and now using a short......

The bolt 223 bolt is the length as the 308. The 223 bolt has an added piece to bolt raceway guide to stop it from coming back of the shorter magazine

I no longer have a firing pin problem . As for whether I switching bolts, I have but not the 223 I was talking about. The barrel is on it's original receiver and am using the original bolt assembly and as I said I adjusted the spring tension and everything is good.

How do you go about getting it back assembled ? Mine had several misfires today, I took the bolt completely apart but nothing caught my eye as to being bent or broken. I got my firing pin protrusion set but what about the back side for the cocking mech. How do I set it up ?

Go to the Savageshooters website . There is a section of tech articles detailing the entire process. I bet you can find a YouTube too.
