Savage factory barrel measurements

Hi,
Does anybody know the exact factory measurements (contour) of the Savage FTR .308 barrel?

Hello Praveen,

For a large shank Target Action, the diameter at the threads is ~1.130". The diameter at the muzzle is just slightly over 1.000" (varies a bit, IIRC) and the 'contour' is basically a straight taper from just in front of the threads to the muzzle.

If you want actual measurements I can slip the calipers on a few sometime tomorrow... I've got several sitting on the shelf downstairs.

Hi Monte,
Thanks for the info. If you can measure one of the barrels you have got, that would be absolutely great !
I measured the crown and it shows 0.990 but I couldn't measure the diameter at the threads.

Savage large shank have a 1.125-20 TPI, so the diameter at the threads should be around 1.120". If you say your muzzle is .990", then this should be close enough of a guesstimate.

Are you planning to order a new barrel or what is the purpose of knowing the exact measurements of the barrel?

Thanks Eric,
Yes. I am getting a new barrel from Bartlein and thought that providing them with the exact measurements would help.

I see. Then get it 1.130" at the tenon so that the gunsmith can have enough room to true it up in case the bore is not concentric to the OD.

Got up this morning after night shift and measured the following:

Factory, spanning from 2006 thru 2012. All 30" FTR barrels, with exception of 308 #8 - Factory 29" BR contour

Barrel / Muzzle / Shank / Thread
308 #1 / 0.990 / 1.111 / 1.109
308 #3 / 0.993 / 1.112 / 1.110
308 #4 / 0.988 / 1.116 / 1.115
308 #5 / 0.989 / 1.117 / 1.116
308 #6 / 0.990 / 1.117 / 1.114
308 #7 / 0.990 / 1.117 / 1.114
308 #8 / 0.889 / 1.117 / 1.110
223 #1 / 0.989 / 1.116 / 1.114

Custom barrels (fitted to different guns by the same gunsmith, Greg Swezey of Gold Creek Rifles):

24" Rock Creek #6HV .30 BR 1.1165 (shank) 1.117 (thread)

26" Krieger Heavy Palma .300WM 1.119 (shank) 1.117 (thread)

Wow !
Thanks Monte for all that data. That should be enough to send that info Bartlein.

Eric,
Thats a good idea to get it a bit oversized. I'll send that over.

If you're looking for a gunsmith in WA state... I wouldn't have any qualms recommending Greg. He's a competitive shooter (NBRSA Hunter Benchrest and Varmint for Score) and long range hunter. Still trying to get him to take up F-Class... but if the number of national awards hanging on the wall in his shop are any indication, that might be bad for the rest of us! ;)
