savage f/tr223

I am thinking of getting a ftr in 223 1in 7 twist to shoot f/tr.I would like your opinion on the gun .I already have the f/tr in 308 but would like to tinker with the 223.

Hey Wooger I did put on a new asi target stock on my mini 14 wich allows me to use a sinclaire front rest. A mini 14 could never shoot out to 600 anyway . I am looking foward to the feb12-13 sac valley match. See you there

Here is a good link about using the .223:

While the article talks about 90 gr. bullets the berger 80 gr. work very well for me up to 600. I have used them at 1000 but my wind skills are not always up to it. I found verticle problems with the 80s at 1000 from the same load that holds 1/2 moa at 600.

The one I have works *extremely* well with Berger 82gn BTs out to 600m... well enough to win, anyways. 90s... I haven't got them working as well as I want yet, but given how the 82s shoot, there isn't a whole lot of incentive ;)

I started out in F-T/R with a Tikka 595 in 223 on the BIG target and managed HM scores at 1K. That ended once the the NRA reduced the target, which was justified based on the scores that the hot rods were posting.

I switched to a 308 for F-T/R and enjoy competing with the limitations of this caliber at LR. However, I love my 223 and its lack of recoil, now my Tikka is being rebarreled with a 1:8 28" Hart barrel, destined to shoot the 80.5 Berger. Since I will use this as my mid-range rifle, I don't care about shooting 90 VLD's. in a faster twist barrel.

I'm sure that I'll try it at a 1K practice day for giggles, but won't compete with it at that range.

I've watched the F-Open guys move to heavier and heavier rounds, i.e. 6.5-284 to 7mm's and beyond, trying to negate the wind. I won't go there, I like the challenge of F-T/R and will play in that sandbox.

Enjoy,

Tony

Lots of Savage F/TR .308s at our local shoots but have never seen one in .223. Custom rifles are the order of the day for the .223 with 30 or 28 inch 8 twist barrels. The 80 gr SMK seems to be the preferred bullet.

Had MacLennon make me up a 30 inch 8 twist barrel in .223 on a squared 722 action, rebedded Fajen prone stock. Very accurate off a bench out to 300 metres. Intention was to use in Sierra 300 metre ISU events and in the .22 caliber 2 day match at the Canadian Championships which is shot from 300 to 1000 yds. Also the short ranges in the main event. Great rifle at the short ranges but an ego cruncher at the longs especially with the recent 1/2 minute inner ring at all ranges. A strong wind can have you shaking your head. But there are a few shooters holding their own in competition with the .223 and I take my hat off to them. Myself, I don`t have the patience anymore to lob that small pill over half a mile.

As an aside, the biggest difficulty with the .223 in competition is finding that tiny hole on a patched target face. Typically the markers in the butts at the Provincials and Nationals are teenagers and sometimes they have a devil of a time finding the .22 caliber hole which can hit the edge of a patch and duck under the patch out of sight.

I shot F/TR at the 2010 Canadians and started with the .223 at the shorts. After repeated challenges for "missed" shots I switched to the .308 for all ranges. We shoot in pairs alternating shots and I felt it was unfair to my partner to have the repeated challenges so switched to the .308.

Good luck with your rifle.

Bill

Matt.
You should do a search for posts by Laurie Holland from the UK here ("Laurie") and on Long Range Target Shooting:http://www.usrifleteams.com/lrforum/

He as written quite a bit about the 223 for F-Class.

mattt

this is what i will be doing this year as well 223 to 600 and then the 308 to 1000.i am not quit sure the 223 with the 90s has proven its self at a 1000 atleast not what i have seen that is,but i can say they are a real performer out to 600 i have lost to them a few times at that distance.

Picked f/tr223 after work last night and loaded up some 75 hornady hpbt at with 23 grain varget at oal 3.456. Went to range to break in.Bad start cant find 223 jeg. finally borrow one by this time out of patience just do a few scrubs after a few shots and call breakin good .By my 3rd 3 shot groupe bug hole. then did some scope adjustments and some more shots and dialed in my 600 yard 0 and hopefully ready for f/tr match at sac valley sunday. New gun new scope and base new load with 0 load development I hope this all works out ;D

The worst that can happen is you spend a day at the range shooting. Sounds like a good day to me. Good luck at Sacramento. May the wind gods be kind.

Matt did well for using a rifle he just got......finished 4th, one place out of the money. Big field of shooters, too.

Now that he's got a matched pair of Savage 12F/TRs. I expect good things. ;D

Wooger you guys are shooting usi sun? I am going to yolo to just break my 308 in otherwise I would go to usi.
